Excerpt – Jasir POV
My fist slammed into the heavy bag in front of me as I danced my feet side to side. I ducked my head and threw my left fist out, impacting the bag again. A grunt came from the other side as Joshua, another agent a few ranks below me, held the bag steady. I ducked again and threw a quick left-right-left combo followed by a right shin kick as I danced back.
“MmmMmmMmmm. You want to be the chocolate cream in my blonde Oreo?” Connor’s voice didn’t break my stride as I threw a right-left combo, switching up my rhythm.
“Sorry, Gingersnap. I won’t be double-stuffed filling for you,” I quipped as I threw a last hard rib jab into the bag. Joshua grunted again and then stepped back. I took off my sparring gloves as I walked to the side bench.
Connor huffed. “Only H gets to call me that.”
I glanced over, and he had actually stuck his tongue out at me. I laughed. “It’s perfect for you. You’re sweet and spicy with just the right amount of crunch and perfect for dunking.” The Haitian had called Connor Gingersnap when we rescued him last year and it stuck with me. I grabbed a towel and wiped my face. Sweat in the eyes was never fun. Then I squeezed water into my mouth from the bottle next to the towel.
Connor blushed. “Geez, Mr. T. You say the nicest things.” He sounded sarcastic, but from the blush, I knew he was sincere despite intentionally coming off as a brat.
“What brings your perky butt to the gym?” Since he’d decided to invade my flat whenever he wanted, I decided that I could tease and flirt with him safely. He made it grand fun, especially since we knew nothing would ever come of it. He wasn’t remotely my type, even if he wasn’t attached to a Viking twice his size.
“I’ll have you know that I still come down once a week for PT.” He waved his hand up and down his body. “Besides, I have to keep my boyish figure. I don’t just look this good without effort.”
I winced a little at his mention of PT. I didn’t feel guilty exactly about shooting him. He had forgiven me as soon as he was awake enough to, and if I had to do it again, I’d do the same thing. It wasn’t my fault he got in the way of my shot to kill Bob. I had no way to know he was a good guy. Good being subjective in our line of business.
But as Connor waved his hand over himself like a game show prize, I did have to admit he looked good. He’d even gained some muscle definition he didn’t have before all the working out they made him do in recovery.
I sat on the bench and drank more water as I wrapped the towel around my neck. “Sooooo?” I raised a brow at him.
Connor startled out of his thoughts. “Right. Sorry.” He shook his head a little, like his mind had gone somewhere else, and his face went blank before he smiled again, but this time it didn’t quite meet his eyes. My eyes flicked over to Bob who nodded from behind Connor like he’d noticed and would take care of him when they left there.
It might have seemed like a lot to convey through a simple nod and slight frown that appeared on the Japanese man, but men like us were used to interpreting micro-expressions and making split-second decisions based on them. We needed little else to get our points across to each other.
“The tracker is on the move.” Conner beamed like he’d just pulled a rabbit out of a hat and even made a little tada gesture with the tablet that was in his hand.
I jumped up. “Seriously? Why didn’t you lead with that?” I laughed as I took the tablet he handed to me. There was a small red dot now over the Atlantic Ocean. It had been in Rome for over a month now.
Excerpt 3 – Jasir POV
I followed the porter to my suite. I’d been in my fair share of luxury hotels all over the world, but I had to admit that this one was the most unique. The carpet was thick with a scaled pattern in the halls. The walls had scenes of castles and knights. There were scenes of battles with dragons flying in the sky. However, the unusual part, which made me laugh, was that in all of them, the dragons were winning. Dead knights littered the battlefields. Dragons had knights in their mouths, or dragons stood at the top of the castle in triumph. This was just on the way to the elevator on the ground floor.
The elevator was gold-colored, and it seemed like the panels and rails were plated in gold. Of course, it wasn’t real, but it was a good fake. When we got to the suite floor, almost to the top of the building, the door opened to more interesting images on the walls. There were dragons in an ancient Greek or Roman spa setting. They were lounging on large settees or in pools, and humans waited on them.
I snorted. It was great. The porter glanced back at me with a grin. He probably got told all the time how cool the walls were. Who said that the humans always had to win? The porter stopped at the door and opened it. He wheeled in the trolley and then held the door open for me.
I looked around as I walked in. It was a nice little suite that faced the inside. The central tower was lit up despite being in the middle of the night, but the windows’ shade dimmed the glow. The porter took my case to the room. I held out a twenty as he passed.
“Enjoy your stay, sir.” He smiled brightly and left.
I dumped out the envelope Vincent had given me, and a burner phone slid out along with the room key. The key was a rectangular piece of glass connected to the whole casino, I assumed. We used the same kind of keys at HQ, so I was familiar with them. The papers that slid out were schedules and brochures. You’d think I was on vacation or something.
I pulled out my company phone and dialed Connor. The phone beeped twice before he answered.
“Hey, Mr. T. Did you get settled okay?” He sounded happy like usual.
“Yeah, this place is a trip. You’d love it here.” I sat on the couch and put my feet up on the coffee table.
“The Haitian did work there and goes all the time. He helped me set up your room and everything.”
“So, you did set up the thousand dollars per diem.”
He laughed. “No, I just told him to give you some spending money that wouldn’t be traced back. I guess that’s what he did. It’s going to be a few days before you can meet with the former agent and the Italian. I figured you could use the downtime.”
I could imagine him making a hand gesture like someone was blowing him.
I rolled my eyes with a shake of my head. “Just let me know when the meeting is set, brat.”
“Sure thing. Mr. H is handling it because it’s a former agent and all that jazz, but as soon as he tells me, I’ll let you know.” Connor was professional about everything else and didn’t mention any names. Despite our phones being secure, you never knew who may be listening, and I hadn’t scanned the room yet for bugs.
“Thanks.”
“Get some rest, big guy. Go see a show, relax, have fun.” Connor laughed.
“Brat.” I ended the call and stood. A hot shower and a few good hours of sleep were on the immediate agenda. I’d worry about everything else in the morning.
