Alfie ran a thumb along his bottom lip as he tried not to think about touching Devereaux. About holding him when he looked unsure, about kissing the vulnerable look from him. Alfie was beginning to suspect that behind that gruff, unsmiling exterior was a man who felt things. More than one might imagine. He tried even harder not to think about undressing him in front of the crackling fire in the new parlour. Removing his clothes one item at a time, revealing that long, lean body to his gaze, to his touch, to his …
“Alfie!” The sharp tone told him Kate had been trying to speak to him.
He jumped and looked at her.
“His dinner is ready.”
“Wha… oh, yeah, right, of course.” He cleared his throat and tried to will away the arousal that had swamped him before he stood up. Fortunately, Kate turned her back and he was able to slip out of the kitchen. He ran to the door and stood outside in the freezing cold for a bit, hands tucked under his armpits, until he was decent enough to go and see Devereaux and tell him his dinner was ready.
He went into the small parlour and had to smile at how much happier Devereaux looked in the room. He sat by the fire, book in hand, and looked comfortable, at home, particularly with Potts snoozing on the rug, confirming Alfie’s feeling that Potts was just what he needed.
“Dinner’s ready,” he said. Devereaux looked up with a smile in his eyes. It had dawned on him eventually that he should be calling Devereaux ‘sir.’ However, he’d noticed that every time he didn’t, the man looked faintly amused. So, he didn’t bother changing his ways.
The dog looked up at the same time as Devereaux.
“He’s proper taken to you, hasn’t he?” Alfie nodded at the dog.
The small smile played around Devereaux’s mouth as he looked at Potts with real affection.
“He has.”
“He’s good company. Someone to talk to.”
Devereaux’s smile widened, and it punched Alfie square in the gut. “Do you talk to dogs?”
Alfie laughed. “Have you met Horace yet? I get more sense out of him than most people. Anyway, I’m supposed to be telling you that your dinner is ready,” he said, rapidly changing the subject as his face started glowing.
Devereaux got to his feet slowly, watching Alfie. “Horace?”
“Big old fellow. Spends most of his time in front of the fire in the servants’ kitchen these days. I’ve had him years, he keeps me on the straight and narrow.”
“You must introduce me.”
Alfie nodded. He was willing to wager Devereaux would love Horace. “I will do. He’ll like you.”
Devereaux gave him an odd look. “You’re a remarkable man, Mr. Hope.”
“Me? Naw, pretty ordinary really.” Alfie really was blushing now and feeling uncomfortable. He could feel the tips of his ears burn fiercely. He risked a glance at Devereaux who was watching him closely. The humour disappeared from his eyes to be replaced by something else, something warm, something… oh, God… Devereaux’s gaze dropped to Alfie’s mouth and then returned to his eyes. The man looked momentarily shocked, as though he’d just discovered something.
“What?” Alfie whispered.
Devereaux swallowed. “Nothing. Nothing at all.”

Dances Long Forgotten
On Christmas Eve, Dylan, the man of James Pell-Charnley’s dreams, is on the point of walking out. Then they hear the faint strains of a waltz in the library of the empty abbey. The music is said to be heard only by those truly in love, and it gives James the courage to tell Dylan the story.
In December 1841, Lord Hugo Pell-Charnley is in a terrible mess. The youngest son of the late Marquis, youngest brother of the incumbent, never felt to fit. When his life comes crashing down, and his life and his family are threatened, he is forced to face his elder brother and confess his deepest secret. When he arrives at Winsford Abbey he finds he must also confront the shame from his past in the form of Lyndon Cross. The boy he’d loved but betrayed in school.
As they clear the ghosts from the past, they dance in each other’s arms in the library to the soft strains of the waltz, but long buried secrets threaten to destroy their happiness. Two hundred years later, can those dances long forgotten give James and Dylan the courage to hold on to love?
