Rian has always been Marco’s protector. Abusive parents, school bullies, older creeps–Rian took them all on. Anything to protect his stepbrother. But what if the person Marco needs protecting from, is Rian himself?
For years, Rian tried to deny his need for Marco. To tell himself his desires were wrong. Filthy. Forbidden. But the moment Marco confessed he had the same desires, Rian ran.
It has been three years since Rian saw his stepbrother, and now Marco needs his help more than ever. Selling his body, losing himself in drugs, drowning in shame, Marco doesn’t want Rian to see him like this. But when gay teens across the city start disappearing, there’s no one else he can call. A demonic cult is preying on society’s most vulnerable boys.
These days Rian has found a new way to be a protector; he has joined a team of vigilantes who are keeping the streets safe for Rushton’s gay youth. He knows he can’t get close to Marco, can’t reignite the dangerous desire inside him…but he and his team are the only ones who can help. Rian once swore to keep Marco safe—but is he strong enough to fight the ache inside him? Or will he finally give into his darkest needs?
REVIEW:
Rian and Marco are not what I was expecting. There is good and bad in this discovery.
I had a very hard time warming up to Rian. His whole attitude pissed me off and while I get it was a pivotal plot device, I spent most of the book just wanting to smack him up the back of the head. His treatment of Marco because of his self-disgust really was hard to over come. He does redeam himself but it took far longer than I would have liked.
Marco was sweet and sad and I really just wanted him to see that he deserved so much better than life had given him. I liked him a lot from the very beginning and his back story really did break my heart to pieces. Watching him grow as a human being was very satisfying.
The guys on Rian’s team were interesting and there were some pretty funny moments when they were all together. Brick and Nat seemed like they were flirting (while tormenting each other) so I hope we get to see more from them in future stories.
The premise of this story is really quite interesting but I’ll be honest and say that the focus on the “stepbrother” situation was…overdone as far as I’m concerned. I get that the author was playing up the “forbidden love” part of the story, but it really wasn’t the true issue that the two men had to work through.
Vincent is a character that turned out to be quite different that I thought he would be and that’s one of the good things about this story. The supernatural elements were well done and I think the writing got better in the last half of the story.
Rachel Kane is a new author for me and I can see that they have a lot of potential so I will be checking out book 2 in this series because I have faith that the stories will get better as they go on. I’d like to know more about the agency that Rian works for and the men who started it all too, so I’ll have to tune in.
