The Cuckoo’s Call by Lily Morton
Can a summer romance last forever?
Wren Roberts thought he’d found his fairy tale when he met Mateo Rossi on holiday in Majorca. The wealthy and successful older man swept him off his feet, and before he knew it, he’d thrown caution to the wind and was living in Mateo’s waterside apartment in Venice. It’s a far cry from his harsh upbringing and crummy flat in London.
But as the summer turns to autumn, cracks begin to show. Mateo’s family aren’t welcoming, and there doesn’t seem to be a place for Wren in Mateo’s world. He could have coped with all of that, but Mateo himself seems like a different person away from the sunshine island.
Should Wren have been more cautious in riding off into the sunset when he wasn’t sure what lay over the horizon?
From bestselling author Lily Morton comes a romance about two men who find that sometimes happily ever after doesn’t end there.

I see him as I turn into the hotel forecourt. He’s waiting by the door, an eye-catching figure in a pair of khaki shorts and a bright red T-shirt, the ever-present pink flip-flops on his feet. His thick brown hair is tumbling over his beaky nose, and there’s an air of evident excitement about him.
I’m smiling before I even realise it. There’s just something about Wren that makes me smile. He’s a funny mix of spark and gawky awkwardness, and underneath there’s a golden vein of kindness that I don’t think he’s aware of. He looks at the world a lot differently from me, and it’s fascinating. I remember him crouched by the kitten, hand outstretched. Even the cat had sensed the gentleness in him.
I pull up beside him, and he looks up and grins, showing white teeth in a tanned, thin face. A dimple tugs at his right cheek like a little comma. It had been there the first time I saw him in the foyer speaking sharply to the spoilt rich boys—a sense of mischief.
It had been impulse that had made me invite him to dinner. I’d meant to reprimand Felipe and get them to give the boy a free meal, but then I’d looked into his warm brown eyes and found myself inviting him over. Then I’d increased my foolishness yesterday and asked him to stay for the week.
I don’t regret that impulse, and I’m not sure why. I don’t live my life by whims. I’ve seen the disastrous effects of that in my father’s life. Mine is always calm and ordered. Just the way I like it.
Becoming aware that he’s waiting for me, I reach over and throw the door open, and he grins.
“Morning,” he says, climbing into the Jeep and bringing with him the scent of coconut sun lotion and the fresh smell of the hotel body wash. I think about the basket I’d had sent to his room. It had made me happier to do that for him than when I buy expensive presents for the men who pass through my life.
“Morning,” I echo. When he thrusts a bag at me, I ask, “What is this?”
“A present.” He buckles his seat belt. I scowl down at the bag in confusion, and he laughs. “It’s my contribution towards Operation Dress Down. A new outfit for you.” He pauses and says in a Spock voice, “It’s life, Jim, but not as you know it.”
I peer into the bag and see a bundle of clothes. “Wren, you shouldn’t have bought me anything.” Foremost in my brain is the fact that he’s very obviously short of money.
He shakes his head. “I’d save your thanks until you’ve seen what I’ve bought you. You’re going to look rather different from your usual suave self.”
“Suave? You make me sound like James Bond.”
“Then you can smack my arse and call me Miss Moneypenny.”
He instantly flushes bright red, and I can’t stop my laughter. “I think your private daydreams should maybe be kept to yourself.”
“Shut up,” he mutters. Even the tips of his ears are red.
I smile at him and then return to the topic of utmost concern. “You shouldn’t have spent money on me,” I protest.
His head comes up, and he narrows his eyes at me. “I can spend my money where I want,” he says, a warning note in his voice.
I nod, respecting his pride. “Of course,” I accede. “You know best.” I add meekly, “Miss Moneypenny.”
