Benny From The Block by K.C. Kassidy
Blockers, Book Two
When high school principal, William Garrison, steps in to help a bullied freshman boy, he is surprised to learn that fifteen-year-old Ben is the son of his former high school nemesis, Benito “Benny” Vega.
William has mixed feelings about seeing Benny again, considering Benny was the one who used to torment and pick on William for being different. But Benny is a changed man, in more ways than one, and he wants the chance to prove to both his son and William that he’s not the same guy he once was.
Can William be the bigger man and let go of his unresolved feelings toward Benny or will their shared personal history get in the way of helping Ben?
After all, they do say love always wins, right?

I return to my office and quickly assess the rehearsal schedule for the coming week. Each day we cover a new scene with the performers, but today I also have my first one-on-one with Benny and the set design team to introduce him to his crew of three.
I’m still in shock at how easily he agreed to help me out. Well, technically not me, but for the sake of his son’s interest in performing.
Had someone told me fifteen years ago that Benny Vega would subject himself to not only a favor I asked of him, but also to spending afternoons surrounded by hormone-driven teens new to using hammers, I wouldn’t have believed it. To be honest, it still blows my mind. I can’t reconcile Benny from the block—the tough, good-looking, combative bully from my teen years—to the downright sexy—and dare I say, caring—single father he is today.
Although I briefly saw small inklings of his benevolence in the past, never would have I expected Benny Vega to turn out to be the kind of man he is now.
A knock on my door pulls my attention away from both the schedule and my thoughts. I drag my gaze to the person standing at the door.
The man occupying my mind stands in my doorway, blocking my view of the office corridor, and I may forget how to breathe. Benny wears a worn pair of fitted jeans with a hole above one knee, a white T-shirt with a Vega Construction logo on the left that stretches tight across his broad shoulders and beefy arms, and a tool belt that hangs over his trim waist.
My mouth goes dry as I try to speak.
Stop it. He’s not available.
“Sorry to interrupt, but I got here earlier than I expected and wasn’t sure where you wanted me to start.” His lips curve up into a humorous smirk. “I can tell by the way you’re staring at me you didn’t expect me to be on time for anything.”
I can’t help but laugh, but it’s only partially true. Although I’m awestruck for an altogether different reason, the fact that he’s on time does come as a pretty big shock. Back in the day, Benny came and went as he pleased, not giving two shits about school rules around tardiness or attendance.
I wave him off. “Nah, that’s not it. I just recall you weren’t known to follow the rules when we were in school.”
Benny shrugs and the tips of his ears turn pink. Wait, is he embarrassed at being called out about his past? Now I’ve seen everything.
