Deputy US Marshal Jamie MacDougall assumes his latest assignment is just another security detail, but when he finds himself falling for the gorgeous key witness he’s sworn to protect, it takes everything he has to keep things professional.
When Ashley Pandy enters the WITSEC program, with a new identity and a new life far away from Seattle and Jamie, he tries to move on, but a year later, with no hope of seeing him again, he still can’t forget the man who stole his heart.
Ashley walked away from love for noble reasons. Jamie let him go because it was the honorable thing to do. When a foolish decision gives them a second chance to be all kinds of wrong, can they finally get it right?
REVIEW:
Ash is a witness who has a target on his back. After he testifies as a whistleblower against his best friend’s father and the company he worked for. While under Witness protection from the US Marshal Service, he meets Jamie MacDougall. They dance around each other, but there is definitely something there. A year later, Ash finds out that his best friend is close to death and he has to go see him. But the bad guys are waiting for him and so he does the only thing he can think of when he manages to escape – and that’s call Jamie.
Jamie has been pining for Ash for a year. He knows he can’t break the rules and find out where Jamie is and what his new identity is. But then he gets a call that jumpstarts his heart. It’s Ash and he’s in trouble. So of course Jamie helps him. While they are on the run, so to speak, they get closer. And finally all those pent up feelings come out. They share their pasts and their hope and dreams and they fall in love. But of course you know it can’t be that easy.
When Ash is again in trouble again, Jamie and his friends come to the rescue. And then there is Jamie. He’s willing to do what he can for a future with Ash.
This is my first book from this author and also for this narrator and I really liked it. I was a little bit miffed at Ash for taking too may risks, but I supposed when abandoned by family and really only have one friend and that friend is dying, one would be willing to do just about anything. I loved Jamie. What a wonderful guy. So protective and loving and just the perfect person for Ash. Ash needs someone who really see and appreciates him and he’s literally never had that except for Oliver, his best friend. In the end, I came to understand and appreciate their circumstances. Although this isn’t a totally new trope, this was a very deft telling of a guy falling in love with his protector and dealing with danger. I also really enjoyed Jon Curtis’s performance. He really acted this story, not just read it. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series. Recommended.
