Will friends become lovers this Christmas?
Sam
People joke that Etienne and I are boyfriends, but whatever.
Sure, I think about him all the time—he’s my best friend. If I’ve missed him way more than I expected when he left to train with a new skating coach, that’s because he’s so easy to hang with. And yeah, he’s gay, but he’s not into me. Why would he be? I’m straight.
We’re not boyfriends.
But now Etienne needs me, so I’m rushing to the mountain village where he’s skating in a holiday show. That’s what best friends do.
Etienne
I know Sam will never like me the way I like him.
Never love me the way I love him.
But now that my competitive skating career might be suddenly ending, I need my best friend by my side. Thank god Sam’s spending the holidays with me.
It’s okay that he’ll never love me back.
It’s okay that there’s only one bed in this cozy little cabin.
We’re best friends. Nothing’s going to happen.
Only One Bed is a gay Christmas story from Keira Andrews featuring friends to lovers, bisexual awakening, first times, snowy holiday vibes, and of course a happy ending.
REVIEW:
Keira Andrews writes cute holiday stories and this one is no exception, particularly if you’re into ice skating. If you’re reading this review you obviously like the only one bed romance trope. What makes it even better in Only One Bed is that the occupants of said bed are best friends. Add in one more great trope – bisexual awakening – and you have a sweet holiday novella.
Sam didn’t realize he’d been feeling more than friendship for his best friend, Etienne. Everyone around them seemed to know that Sam was caught up in stronger feelings, though; his friends and family were just waiting for it to occur to him. As for Etienne, he never thought he’d see the day the boy he had loved for years would reciprocate his feelings.
Sam and Etienne have been best friends since Etienne transferred into Sam’s high school when they were fourteen. Seven years later, Sam is attending university in Vancouver while Etienne and his ice dancing partner, Bree, train in New Jersey where they are unhappy.
The friends have been apart for two years now and are missing each other when they have an opportunity to meet up. Etienne and Bree will be performing in an ice show over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, so Etienne invites Sam to come join him. Etienne dreams that someday Sam – who has always identified as straight – will return his love, while Sam wonders why he seems to be excited to see his best friend in new and different ways.
This is a simple, straightforward, feel-good story. You won’t find extensive character development or backstory in this short book, but it’ll do its job of putting a smile on your face. I particularly recommend it to ice skating fans.
