A Wildlands Firefighter Romance
Loving Tribulation Brewster was as hot and all-consuming as a July brushfire. It burned him out. Jack recognized that too much booze and too much blind love wasn’t going to make a relationship–and he left. Fifteen years later Jack Reyna and Trib Brewster meet up on a fire line during the biggest forest fire in a decade. Only Jack’s the boss. And Trib is a convict worker. Will nothing short of a fire whirl keep them from reuniting?

Jack rose to his elbows and took his meds with a long swig of soda. “You haven’t said that to me for a long time.”
“I haven’t had you flat on your back in a while, either.” Trib popped the lid on a can and then drank.
“Thanks,” Jack said. He stretched out again. “Why were you in the joint?”
“I’m on the tail end of three months in a minimum-security facility upstate for numerous indiscretions of the law.”
“Want to talk about it?”
“I lost my cool when we responded to a domestic violence with injury call. We were closer than the cops and arrived before them. I was on an aid crew then. I pulled a big dude off a little dude. There was a woman slumped in the corner covered in blood. Her legs and the floor under her…saturated. The big guy had nail rakes across his face and blood on his fists. He had the smaller dude’s pants down and his fly was open. Not a pretty sight. It was pretty clear what was going on. I don’t feel so bad that I decked an abuser. I decked him good. Then I put him in a T-hold and smashed his head through the plaster and broke his jaw and nose.”
“You did what anyone would have done.”
“The only time a man should fight with fire is when he’s fighting fire. I lost control. I plead guilty. Commissioner was a relative of the guy I hospitalized. I knew it was karma biting me on the ass and figured I’d better pay the price. I got six months—three off for good behavior and work release. I heard the woman needed extensive reconstructive surgery and that the smaller man who was about to get spite-reamed was her brother. I still feel guilty about…everything.”
“Nothing like guilt to spur a man on. Must be why your pacifist fist collided with my head.”
“Man’s gotta keep his word, especially to himself. If I hadn’t smacked you, I would have regretted it the rest of my life. You deserved it, you son of a bitch. It won’t happen again. I can’t say I’m sorry, but…it won’t happen again,” Trib said.
