Dead Serious by Vawn Cassidy
Crawshank’s Guide to the Recently Departed, Book 1
Tristan Everett had always preferred the company of the dead because they were quiet and didn’t talk back. As a slightly awkward introvert working as a pathologist at the Hackney Public Mortuary suited him just fine. That is, until a freak accident with a rogue ice cube and suddenly he can see ghosts. No longer content to just lie on the table and let him figure out how they died, they’re now peering over his shoulder critiquing his work and confessing their most lascivious sins before skipping off merrily into the afterlife.
Just when he thought his life couldn’t get any weirder, London’s most infamous drag queen, Miz Dusty Le Frey, is wheeled in with a toe tag and she’s not prepared to go quietly into the light. Not only is she furious at the prospect of spending eternity in last season’s gold lamé, she’s determined that he help her solve her murder.
Suddenly Tristan finds himself thrown into a world of sequins and fake eyelashes, and worse still, he may have developed a crush on Scotland Yard’s brand new drool-worthy detective, Inspector Danny Hayes, who’s been assigned to Dusty’s murder. Oh, and the killer now wants him dead too…
All he ever wanted was a simple life but suddenly he’s juggling work, a deliciously sexy detective, a stubborn ghost and a relentless murderer… and things have just gotten dead serious….

Suddenly, I feel the strange prickle from earlier flare at the back of my neck, only ten times stronger, as static electricity ripples along my skin causing me to shiver involuntarily, and once again, that low pitched hum buzzes in my ears. My hair feels like it’s standing on end, and there’s a peculiar metallic taste in my mouth.
I blink slowly as I become aware of a presence, and from the corner of my eye, I see someone leaning in alongside me to stare at the body, mimicking my stance. Wandering who’d managed to sneak into the room without me hearing the door, I slowly turn my head, my eyes tracking to the person leaning down next to me. I blink again, and for a long slow minute my brain can’t quite seem to process what my eyes are seeing.
I can’t even explain it. There, standing right next to me is the woman who is currently lying dead on the table, a doppelgänger? A twin? My brain is desperately grasping at straws trying to figure out what I’m looking at when I register the woman standing next to me doesn’t just look the same as the person on the table, she’s exactly identical right down to the blood stained blonde wig, the mascara tracks down her cheeks and the gold rouched dress.
She looks up at me, her wide brown eyes locking on mine, mirroring my shock. She glances back at the corpse and then back to me, panic and disbelief swirling in her eyes. She lets out an ear-piercing scream, which jolts through my system like a thousand volts, and I’m ashamed to admit that I let out my own startled scream, which is surprisingly high pitched and with all the style and finesse of a cheerleader about to be murdered in the opening scenes of a B horror movie.
I stumble back instinctively and slam into the table of surgical instruments sending them crashing to the floor as I clutch the table behind me so tightly my knuckles turn white.
I watch in profound disbelief as the woman in front of me sucks in a loud breath, and as her eyes roll back in her head, she drops to the floor in a dead faint.
My heart is pounding in my chest so hard I can feel it in my ears, and I’m breathing heavily as my eyes flick between the body on the table and the one on the floor, unable to come up with a logical explanation.
There’s only one thought flickering in my brain like a broken neon sign…What the fuck is going on?
