Turning up on the first day of a job you desperately need to discover you’ve already slept with your billionaire boss? Yeah, that’s a bit of a conundrum.
Learning he’s a closeted bisexual currently embroiled in a – by all accounts bogus – sexual harassment scandal? That’s more of a fiasco.
But having to sit outside the office of one of the sexiest men alive, day in, day out, knowing there’s no chance of a repeat? That’s what I’d call a disaster.
My sexy-as-hell boss, Spencer Cox, has one rule: No messing around with the employees. And seeing as how I can’t afford to give up this job, that kind of puts me between a rock and a hard place. A very hard place if you get my meaning…
The way things are going, I’ll be lucky to survive in this job a month.
The Suits & Sevens series spins off from the Love & Luck series, however it is not necessary to have listened to the Love & Luck books before listening to Mr. Big Shot.
REVIEW:
Will takes a job with a steady paycheck and schedule so that he can be there for his mother who has recently had a stroke. While she’s recovering, she doesn’t have full use of her arm and he’s worried about her and wants to take care of her. He didn’t meet his new boss during the interview process, but he has been under some suspicion because a disgruntled former employee has accused him of harassment.
Spencer Cox just wants to get on with his life. He’s a successful businessman who works with his twin sister running the family business. His father is a homophobe who he tries to avoid. Never mind that he’s actually bisexual, but his treatment of Spencer is not great. In addition, Spencer’s mother left when he and his sister were small children and his father is now on his 4th or 5th wife – so no surprise that he’s not a great father 😉
When Spencer goes out to let off some steam after the pain in the neck dealings with his former assistant’s lies, he goes out to a club with his friends. He’s glad to spend time with his friends and he notices a guy who presses all his buttons at the bar. They manage to get away from their friends and hook-up. Imagine the surprise when Will walks into work the next week to discover his hot as hell hookup is actually his new boss! Both men are thrown off a bit. But things go OK and they agree that it’s no harm/no foul since they had no idea.
Spencer’s life get a bit complicated and so does Will’s. But they get closer and Spencer craves the ability to give control to Will. When Will shows up at his apartment after a night out drinking with his friends, well things move to the next level. And they agree to keep things separate. Their relationship outside of the office is flipped from their relationship in the office.
Unfortunately just as things have cooled down with the former PR issue and the perpetrator has recanted and apologized, Spencer is outed. And the details around his sex life, his preferences, his current relationship with an employee are all damning. And Spencer jumps to the wrong conclusion. He’s so hurt he can’t see the forest for the trees in this case. Luckily he has family and friends that help him see the light 😀
This is one of my favorite tropes – probably most famously the opening setup of Grey’s Anatomy – hooking up with your new boss right before starting a new job 😀 I really appreciated Spencer and Will’s ability to put things aside at the office but still have a smoking hot relationship outside the office. Spencer’s consideration of Will’s family situation was a good indicator of what a good heart he has. He’s been knocked down a few times, but he keeps getting up. Will doesn’t want to do anything to jeopardize his situation with his mom or his job. And he really cares for Spencer and is willing to wait for Spencer to be ready to come out. That alone should have registered with Spencer that Will wouldn’t betray him in that way – but Spencer reacts like a wounded animal – as anyone would. Thankfully he does what’s needed to get back in Will’s good graces.
Both of these characters are very likable. They obviously click right away and that little pesky problem of the work relationship is handled deftly – although maybe not all that realistically 😉 Who knows. Based on the number of men who marry their secretaries, this must not be out of the realm os possibility 😛 I loved Nick Russo’s interpretation of the characters in this story. I believed Spencer’s pain in dealing with his dysfunctional family and I felt for Will trying to do all he could for his mom. Great performance as usual. I’m looking forward to the other books in this series coming out in audio too. Definitely recommended for those who are looking for a mildly angsty story leading to an HEA.
