They followed Gloria down a short hallway with two doors on opposite sides. She opened one and stepped back so they could see inside the room. Ryder understood what she’d meant when she said it was hard to tell. Debbie’s room was an explosion of belongings. The bed wasn’t made, clothes and stuffed animals were piled everywhere, and a bookshelf with a few paperbacks on the shelves sat under her window. There were stacks of makeup, as well as several framed photographs that looked to be of Debbie and her friends at prom or another dance. Shay picked up one of them and peered at it. Ryder looked over his shoulder. The three girls were all traditionally posed and smiling for the camera.
“That’s Debbie on the end, her friend Mary in the middle, and Gabby on the other side.”
Debbie was the shortest and smallest of the three girls, almost waifishly slender. Her dark hair was swept up in a fancy braid, and the off-the-shoulder midnight blue dress she wore left little to the imagination.
“She told me was changing jobs.” Gloria sniffled. “She said she was quitting that awful bikini barista place. I was so glad. I don’t care who wears a swimsuit, and I don’t believe in body shaming, but I swear the only customers that drive through there are lecherous old men who want to see naked young women and don’t want to pay for it at Honey’s.”
Going out on a limb, Ryder was going to assume Honey’s was a local strip club.
Shay asked, “Did she ever have any trouble with customers?”
Gloria shrugged, the lines in her face even more pronounced. “Debbie is pretty. Men have been looking at her since she was a preteen. If I could have wrapped her up and hidden her from the world, I would have. But I don’t remember her mentioning anyone specific. That job was just so unlike her, but she said she was saving money for classes.”
“What classes was she interested in?” Ryder asked.
“Criminology, believe it or not. I told her she listened to too many true-crime podcasts. Debbie laughed and said maybe so, but that was what she wanted to try for anyway. She is really excited for her classes this fall. She said all the volunteer work she’d been doing was going to pay off.”
“She’d been volunteering for Delores Sam as well?”
“That’s right.”
“What did she do there?” Ryder wanted to know what kept Debbie Sampson volunteering and working at least a part-time job.
“I don’t really know. She loved working there, though, and I think she wished Delores could pay her. Last summer she got to do a six-week internship in British Columbia at a tribal law and outreach center. When she came back she was fired up to be the one who would change things in our community—she’s… she hates that crimes against our most vulnerable people are often ignored. Lord, she talked about it all the time. Debbie may be small, but she’s a warrior.”
