“Want to talk about it?”
Kris’s storm-colored eyes, the hue of the ocean before a rainstorm, met his. “About how spectacularly I managed to make myself and the team look bad? No, thank you.”
Rory bumped their shoulders together. “Sorry you got arrested.”
Leaning back against the counter, Kris rubbed his eyes. “I don’t even blame them, you know. The cops showed up as I was hauling one guy off another. From their perspective, it looked damning. Enough to haul us all in.”
“If it makes you feel better, you’re not the first NHL player to get arrested.”
Kris raised an eyebrow. “Any of them get arrested in the last week whose focus we could turn the media to?”
“Nope. Sorry.”
Kris only grunted acceptance of that fact. “What were you doing at my back door, anyway?”
“You didn’t answer your front one.”
Kris slow-panned in his direction. “So you thought you’d sneak into the back by . . .”
“Climbing your fence, yes.”
“Huh.” God, Kris’s smile was lethal. “Just checking.”
Rory added the peppers to his pan and was about to whisk the eggs in a bowl when the phone on the table vibrated. The smile slipped off Kris’s face, and Rory cursed the phone gods everywhere, wishing he could do something to make Kris smile again, even if it was at his own expense.
Sighing, Kris straightened. “Damage control number 782.”
Rory stared after him as his long-legged stride took him back to the table. “What does that mean?”
“Never mind.”
“Emery wants you to call him, by the way,” Rory blurted before Kris could answer the phone.
Kris blinked at him once. “Emery. Fuck. He must be dealing with the fallout too.” Sitting heavily in his chair, he ran both hands through his hair and yanked. The phone stopped ringing. “Goddamn it.”
The toaster oven dinged. Rory moved the bread onto a plate, hissing when he burned his fingers. The toast was charred and smelling strongly of smoke. “Crap.”
Kris huffed an unamused laugh. “Welcome to my life.”
