Cassius studied the two dull-faced demons standing in their path. As heliophobes, the Lucifugous could control darkness and wield it as a weapon, blinding their victims’ sight while they attacked.
“You guys should stop before things get ugly,” he warned the pair.
The demons glanced at one another.
“You ugly,” the one on the left said sullenly.
“He didn’t hire the smartest cookies in the batch as his guards, huh?” Morgan muttered.
“How do you want to play this?”
Morgan sighed. “I’ll handle Dumb and Dumber. You go after our guy.”
The Lucifugous demons’ eyes rounded as Cassius unfurled his wings.
“Devil!” the one on the right mumbled, staggering backward.
“Guardian of Light!” the second demon said hoarsely, his tone almost reverential.
Cassius leapt into the air. His black and red wings, so different from the gray ones of the other Fallen, had earned him worse names than devil. Guardian of Light was newer, however, and a title he’d only become aware of recently.
Steps appeared in the distance as he navigated the torch-lit tunnel, his feathers skimming the ceiling and walls. He accelerated and darted up them. A group of startled magic users came into view halfway up the stairs. Cassius rolled and flicked around them. Dazzling brightness framed the exit some hundred feet above him. He folded his wings as he emerged into the daylight and landed lightly on the pavement at the top.
A commotion to the left drew his gaze.
Julia was sitting on top of the alchemist on the dented roof of a Maserati parked at the curb.
“Get off me, you bitch!” the man yelled.
His face was puce and his chin peppered with spit where he struggled beneath her, hands and feet scrabbling uselessly at the metal as he attempted to shift the angel off him.
Julia didn’t budge.
“Not until you say uncle.” She paused. “And apologize for the bitch comment.”
“How’d they get up there?” Cassius asked the rest of their team as they arrived at a light jog.
“She picked him up when he came out and dropped him on the car,” Adrianne replied, her voice full of misplaced pride.
Cassius sighed at the Terrene angel. “You know the owner is gonna be pissed, right?”
Julia shrugged. “So?”
On cue, a loud wail rose behind them. “My baby!”
A man in a suit that probably cost Cassius’s rent hurried past them and headed for the damaged vehicle, his fingers stretching his skin as he dragged his hands down his pale face.
He glared at the angel and the prisoner atop it. “What did you do to my car?!”
“I apologize, sir.” Julia rose, snagged the alchemist by the back of his collar, and landed lightly on the curb. “Please rest assured that the Argonaut Agency will take care of the repairs to your vehicle.”
Zach and Bailey cuffed the disgruntled alchemist and checked him over for hidden weapons and potions while Julia dealt with the Maserati owner.
“Take care of the repairs?!” The man scowled. “How is that going to help me in the meantime? I need my—”
He stopped talking. Julia had just smiled.
“Hmm.” The guy blinked. “I mean—”
Julia indicated the coffee place on the corner of the block. “How about I take down your details over a drink?”
“Sure.”
The man headed after Julia with a glazed expression.
Cassius made a face.
Like all the angels and demons who fell to Earth five hundred years ago, Julia was stunningly attractive. Humans couldn’t resist the Fallen’s looks at the best of times. They pretty much had zero chance when an angel or demon turned on the charm.
Adrianne watched the pair stroll away with an expression that was half awe, half disgust. “Wow.”
