Legacy by Gail Z. Martin
Deadly Curiosities, Book 5
A dark witch dynasty. A malicious, immortal undersea place-spirit. Eternal guardians who wagered their souls to protect Charleston.
Omens of impending disaster have the city on edge. Tremors warn of earthquake risk, while a potentially catastrophic storm gathers strength over the ocean and heads for land.
A last-man-standing promise among elderly veterans creates a dangerous inheritance involving an imprisoned, wish-granting goblin. A sea captain and a swashbuckler worked blood magic to protect Charleston from an ancient evil with a spell that bound their souls and their descendants to the task, but danger looms as its power fades. The head of a witch family wants artifacts and secrets—and he’ll do anything to get them.
Cassidy Kincaide runs Trifles and Folly, an antique and curio store where her touch magic helps get cursed and haunted objects out of the wrong hands. More than once, she and her allies have saved the world from supernatural threats.
The clock is ticking for Cassidy and her friends to stop the dark warlock, capture the goblin and restore the guardian spell before a malevolent ancient entity takes its vengeance on Charleston and the coast. It’s going to take all the magic, courage and quick thinking they can muster—and for once, that might not be enough.
Legacy is an action-packed urban fantasy paranormal thrill ride full of dark magic, infernal creatures, goblins and demigods, haunted places, pirate ghosts, found family, witch dynasties, loyal friends, Voudon spirits, secret history and plenty of adventure.
Book Five in the Deadly Curiosities series.

Teag and I knew that we couldn’t do justice to Gideon’s memoir during the workday, even without our extra trip to try to find Wilton. I already felt guilty about having Maggie cover for us so often, so meeting up that evening after all the excitement of the afternoon was—hopefully—over—seemed like the perfect solution.
We stopped by the store to get the book from the safe. The wardings at my house were just as strong as those around the shop, and we could be more comfortable digging into the book’s details.
Knowing Etheridge was out there, we didn’t take chances. I had my wand and the walking stick that had once belonged to Sorren’s maker. Both let me channel my touch magic into a defense—one as a blast of force and the other as a stream of fire. Teag had his martial arts knives as well as a curled metal whip that gave him more range. I put the book into a cross-body messenger bag and grabbed a sweatshirt from the hook on the wall, pulling it on over the bag and zipping it shut.
If anyone tried to take the book, they’d have to fight for it.
“Ready?” Teag asked.
I nodded. “Ready as I’m going to get.”
We had parked right in front of the store. The wardings on the building extended a few inches beyond the shop’s front windows but not all the way across the sidewalk. According to Rowan, it was more difficult to put a permanent warding on public land than on property owned by an individual.
All we had to do was make it three feet to the car. Usually, I wouldn’t think twice—Charleston’s crime rate is pretty low. But now that we knew we had a powerful witch out to grab Gideon’s book, three feet felt like a sprint across the DMZ.
Teag used his key fob to unlock the Volvo and moved to stand between me and the sidewalk, covering me as I locked up. Despite the streetlights, the area in front of the store seemed darker than usual. Intuition told me bad things were coming.
A low growl drew my attention as I stepped forward to stand beside Teag. The shadows shifted around the car, but the motion was all wrong—certainly nothing human. What I could make out in the dim light had arms and legs that were too long and jointed backward.
Sharp nails scratched against concrete. The creature unfolded, standing up to its full height, and now we could see it in the streetlight’s glow.
The body might have once been human, but now it was unnaturally elongated, changed into something monstrous. The creature looked as if the skin had been stripped from its body, revealing sinew and muscle like a moving anatomical figure. It threw back its head and howled, revealing a maw of razor-sharp teeth.
“Rawhead,” Teag murmured. “Bloody Bones.” I recognized both names from the lore but never thought I’d see one.
I shook the dog collar on my left wrist, and Bo’s ghost appeared. Bo’s hackles raised, and he lowered his head. He took one look at the Rawhead and growled protectively.
That drew the Rawhead’s attention, and it fixed its lidless eyes on Teag and me, then opened its maw again, exposing sharp, pointed teeth.
“If we can draw him away from your car, I can blast him without torching your Volvo.”
Teag took a half-step forward, and the Rawhead shifted to track him. “Let me see what I can do.”
I drew Alard’s walking stick and waited for my chance.
