Here we are halfway into September and looking ahead to another Gay Rom Lit the beginning of October. But like everything else in the last eighteen months, that’s a more complicated proposition than it has been.
I’m signed up to go. And I plan to be there (barring the unforeseen.) But a lot of folks have had to cancel, for various reasons, and some of the best parts of GRL – the hugs and the talks over food and drinks – now carry new risks.
I’m lucky, in being able to drive there (albeit a 9-hour drive to St. Louis.) Not only is that soooo much easier as an author (no decisions about how many books and swag to bring, versus the suitcase weight) but in these uncertain times it also feels safer than an airline flight. I’m fully vaccinated, and fortunate enough not to have medical conditions that make me at higher risk.
There are still a bunch of folk going whom I can’t wait to see again. The atmosphere of GRL can’t be totally subdued by masks and distancing and precautions. I look forward to the boost I always get from hanging out with my people – the folks who wave the rainbows and love the books. This is always a highlight of my writing year.
If you happen to be near St. Louis (Hilton at the Ballpark), and your personal risk assessment is low, the Saturday mid-day book signing is open to the public. (two groups 10:00 -11:30 and 12:30 – 2:00) We’d love to have you mask up and come and say hello.
And the whole world has its fingers crossed for next year.
