BLURB:
An obsession with the past becomes his love story.
Obsessed with RMS Titanic from a young age, Lucas Thompson has spent his life studying the shipwreck and turning his passion into a career in marine archeology. But, on the one-hundred-year anniversary of the voyage, he’s drawn to the ship’s resting place by a strange sonar ripple that hurtles him back in time. Luke wakes in the year 1912 as a passenger on the grandest ship in the world.
It’s there that he meets Quinton Hawthorne, the man who sacrificed himself to save passengers during the sinking, including Luke’s great-grandmother. He also comes face-to-face with Lucinda Hughes, the very woman who raised him on her stories of the ship. With his inside knowledge of the impending disaster, Luke feels a responsibility to change history and develops a plan to save the doomed ship and its passengers.
Things quickly fall apart as Luke begins to fall for Quinton, knowing that it can only end in heartbreak. Though he’s determined to save Quinton, he’s also faced with a dilemma. Should he save the ship or allow destiny to play out?
REVIEW:
His family connection to the HMS Titanic set Luke on a career course that brings him to the ship’s wreck almost a hundred years from the day it sank. There’s a blip reading on the ship that’s never been there before. With his crew of friends, he investigates. By a twist of something paranormal, Luke is transported back in time to the Titanic. Once there, Luke faces many troubling questions. Should he save the ship? What would happen to history if he did? Would his grandparents even meet? Could he let Quinton die? Will he go down with the ship? How does he get back to his own time?
Oh wow. Just about everyone in the known universe knows about the HMS Titanic. The movie, too, is one of Hollywood’s greatest films, and don’t get me started on the music. Whether a fan of history, the stories, or just curious, everyone has an image of the Titanic. There is a connection somewhere to the tale and of one of the world’s most renowned disasters. Sooo, when deciding to pick up The Depths of Time, one’s heart is already out there, ready and waiting. Mine certainly wasn’t disappointed. From the very first lines, I was hook, lined, and sinkered into this story – needing a box of tissues for the tears that freely flowed. All I want to write for this review is three hundred (and more) words of READ IT.
Told in the third person from Lukas’s viewpoint, the technical aspects are superb, and the story is beautifully written. The atmospherics and world-building are excellent, truly transporting me back to the decks of the great ship. The way, not just Luke’s, but all characters were written, made the reading experience very personable – one that gets into the soul. And oh, wow – Quinton – simply a delight to have on the page. The developments between Luke and Quin are divine. The pain and anguish over falling in love on a doomed ship and whether he – if, could, or should – do anything to change the course of history.
If you have a sentimental bone in your body at all, then this is a must for the Shelf. But, don’t read it in a public place because onlookers will think you loopy. By the last page, I wanted it to end – after all, I’d finished the box of tissues but also wanted to read more because I didn’t want to say goodbye. Blooming awesome.
