“A son! A child! How? Why? Fuck! Phil! You can’t have! And does this sperm-child want to see you?”
Abandonment, trust, suspicion and compromise—integral parts of a mystery that involves industrial espionage, sperm donation and coming to terms with oneself and the truth.
Sperm donors know that now, under UK law, offspring who reach eighteen have the right to learn a donor’s identity and last known address, but Phil Roberts donated before the law was changed. He is shocked and dismayed to learn that he has a son called Lewis who intends to visit. Phil’s husband, Raith, is furious—and very scared.
What does Lewis Lennon really want? The man he has always called ‘dad’ is dead. Was his death suicide or was he murdered? Lewis wants Phil to find out. So, Phil, Raith, Mike and Ross, the County Durham Quad, plus their special friend, Nick, are embroiled in another investigation, but, as always, their relationships come under scrutiny too.
REVIEW:
As usual, the story with these five is never not interesting. And having a child added to the mix is definitely a new one for these guys. And one not everyone is too keen on, especially Raith. But Lewis needs help and he feels that they may be the only way to go.
I’ve always loved this series. It’s never been about a polyamory relationship for me. It’s been about the mystery, the plot and what’s going on. And that is never uninteresting. At all. I did have one problem with this one though. There’s an incident between Nick and Mike, and I’m not getting into details, because you know, spoilers. But I honestly feel like Mike got off way too easy with that incident. He knew how Nick felt and still feels and yet he keeps pushing and I don’t think that’s fair to Nick. No matter how many times Nick has to tell him how he feels.
But on the other hand, it was another good mystery. One involving a gold theft, people in hiding, murders, fraud and so much more. I loved that part of this story. To see how their minds work as they figure out the ins and outs. To find out who all is involved and why. And how deep it really goes. And in this case, why an innocent man seemed to commit suicide out of no where. I had a feeling why some of the things happened the way they did. Bad guys just have this way about them usually, and when they’re that dangerous, they don’t play games. They will take out everything in their way to get what they want. I’m just happy in this one none of the five ended up injured or in the hospital this time. Could have been a close call a time or two but all are still alive and very much themselves.
As for the mystery, I still love what these guys do. How their brains work and things progress. It makes for some very good reading and I enjoy it.

Thank you, Becca. I am so chuffed that you enjoyed ARTK and I was really intrigued by your Mike/Nick comment. Hence this… I wrote the story within two months – it virtually wrote itself as I was so clear in my mind about the way I wanted the plot to develop – but getting the Mike/Nick parts together took me almost as long. When I write their ace/non-ace sections, I’m involved so personally even though Nick isn’t me (ace) and Mike isn’t my husband (non-ace). I feel for Nick! But, in a way, my sympathies are with Mike and maybe that’s why, yes, I was a bit easy on him when he got it wrong. It probably reflected some of my own guilty feelings.Complicated!
Provided I discover something that the Quad can run with (I wouldn’t ever wish to force a plot) and provided I can develop Nick/ Mike further, there’ll be a Book 8. Jude
Oh I do love these guys. And I do understand Nick a lot more because i am ace. greysexual actually, so I get where Nick is coming from, so it was hard in that part to not want to punch Mike lol. and it was hard to to see Ross have to go through something again. Which totally isn’t fair to him as well. but i still love the series.
