BLURB:
Is death too great a risk when the reward is freedom?
Dáire Malone has been undead for over 200 years when he is summoned to the home of a would-be queen, a vampiress who possesses an unnatural potency. She declares that Malone will not leave without giving her a pledge of loyalty.
He’s been held in thrall before and would rather face his final death than let another have power over him.
Thomas Clifton is a pirate, or rather, a privateer. He too is summoned to the vampiress’s home and commanded to pledge his fealty to her. Clifton’s allegiance lies only with the man he sees in the mirror, and his first impulse is to run.
But Dáire Malone’s aura of mystery and his melancholy beauty appeal to Clifton, and Malone won’t leave until they destroy the source of the vampiress’s magic. Caught between opposing impulses, Clifton must choose.
Leave, and lose Malone, or stay and risk his freedom…and his life.
REVIEW:
This author has put together an interesting group of characters.
Dáire Malone is a vampire who has no idea that fate is bringing someone into his life that will change everything he knows. Having found a suitable home for him and his progeny, he has no choice but to meet with the vampire “Queen” who controls the area. Unless he wants to run. However he’s tired of the nomadic life they’ve been living and wants to build a place that he and his family can stay for a while.
Thomas Clifton is used to living for himself and his crew and has no idea what is drawing him to the handsome and alluring vampire the queen is looking to take for herself.
Dorothea, Dáire’s “daughter” and her love, Libbie, are strong female characters who are devote to Dáire and I’m finding that harder and harder to find in m/m stories. Cager Long is a good friend to Thomas and rounds out this cast of captivating players.
I loved the premise of this story. Having these two men team up to defeat the evil vampire queen was a lot of fun that the world the author built for them to explore is very well done.
Watching the two men circle around each other as they try to figure out how they are all going to survive the confrontation to come is sexy and exciting!
There’s just enough heat for me, and I love that it doesn’t distract from the actual story going on.
In fact my only complaint is that I would have like a little “more” in the story. A little more anticipation, a little more background. This isn’t about not wanting the story to end, more that I wanted more depth to it.
As it is, it’s very enjoyable and I will be looking for more stories by this very talented author.
