I pushed on, constantly sniffing the air for anyone approaching. So far, the coast was clear. At the edge of a clearing with several houses in it, I stumbled. I stifled a yelp as I went down on my chin. The grass was thick and the dirt soft, so I wasn’t harmed. I shook myself, dirt spraying from my back and muzzle, and looked to see what I tripped on. A paw print. A massive one, almost as big as Bronx’s. Does that belong to a wolf? A closer look at the surrounding area showed more paw prints. Lots more. Not just belonging to the huge wolf, but to at least four or five more. My fur stood on end. I should get out of here. Right then, a long, low howl broke out. I froze, glued to the spot, all my muscles tensed. The howl was soon joined by several others. They weren’t far off. They were east of me, which was terrifying because it was the direction I just came from, the direction of Bolder territory. Even more concerning, they were also a little south of me. If they know I’m here, they can intercept me. Cut off my escape route back into town. My pups. I had to get off this mountain to save my babies. Now’s the time to sprint, Rashad. I took off, not caring how noisy I was. It didn’t matter anymore. The howls went up again; this time they signaled the chase.
