For a few long seconds, Timmy hesitates, and then he joins me on the bed. “My all-time favorite Beatles tune is ‘You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away’.” Although he’s lying down, he’s not relaxed. His shoulders are stiff, and his leg hangs over the edge of the bed like he’s ready to bolt. He grabs his phone. “I’ll put it on.”
“Great tune.” I listen for a minute and then turn toward him. “What about it speaks to you?”
“It’s gritty, I guess. The lyrics, they give the world’s best advice.” He glances at me and then quickly shifts his gaze to the ceiling.
“Which is?”
“Don’t let anybody see you sweat.”
“As in, you’ve got to hide your feelings in public?”
“Yeah, and in private too. And I like the way Lennon sings it…pissed-off and bitter.”
“You can relate?”
Timmy shrugs.
“You put on a good show, but I think you’re quite the Where’s Waldo. You hide too.”
“Um, have you ever met me?” Sarcasm is the easiest way for Timmy to communicate—it’s brassy and harsh and puts people off. Sarcasm makes everybody look away. And he feels safe when he hides behind a bad attitude. I’ve raised a son. I’ve seen his friends. I know what I’m talking about.
“Come here.” I open my arms to him and after another one of those wary Timmy hesitations he leans in.
“This is pretty fucked up. If you were anybody else, you’d already be inside me.”
A zing of emotion shoots from my gut to my extremities. I feel anger, confusion, pity, jealousy, and heat all the way from my fingertips to my toes. “Well, this is us. We’re gonna let things happen however it feels right. And don’t you think this feels right?” I pull him against me.
Once again, he stays silent, but the way he wraps himself around me is the answer I need.

About the Author:
Award-winning gay romance author and mother of four, Mia Kerick, knows that a satisfying romance novel is riddled with challenges. For true love to prevail, the leading men are going to have to put in some effort. But the HEA is oh-so rewarding.
From Jane Eyre’s Mr. Rochester to Brokeback Mountain’s Ennis and Jack, Mia has a great affinity for the tortured hero in literature. Her contemporary gay romance focuses on such steamy tropes as hurt/comfort, forbidden love, and enemies/friends to lovers. She firmly believes that sometimes you have to break his heart to save him. In Kerick’s books, the course of true love truly never does run smooth.
Mia’s books have been featured in Kirkus Reviews magazine. They have won a 2019 IPPY GOLD award for Juvenile/Young Adult Fiction, a 2018 YA GOLD MOONBEAM Children’s Book Award, a YA Readers’ Favorite Award, several Gold Rainbow Awards in YA and adult categories, a Reader Views’ Book by Book Publicity Literary Award, the Jack Eadon Award for Best Book in Contemporary Drama, a YA Indie Fab Award, a First Place Royal Dragonfly Award for Cultural Diversity, a First Place Story Monsters Purple Dragonfly Award, and more. Mia cheers for each and every victory made in the name of human rights. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.
