BLURB:
How can you write a love song before you’ve felt one?
Roland Finley is convinced he has what it takes to win the Battle of the Bands, a reality TV show where up and coming musicians compete for a record deal. But between college, work, and band practice, he hasn’t had time to experience any of the romance he sings about, and his amateur writing needs a lot of work. This is never more apparent than when a stranger in the park stumbles upon his notebook and tells it exactly like it is.
Jay McClintock wanted nothing to do with this silly reality show, but as the head writer for ALIVE Records, his boss had other plans. After being tasked with writing and coaching one of Roland’s biggest rivals behind the scenes, the only thing keeping him sane is teasing the strange (and low-key talented) young writer he encountered in the park.
Writing for the enemy should have been no big deal, but the more Jay accidentally (and not-so-accidentally) runs into Roland, the harder it is for him to come clean about his involvement with the show. Fortunately, there’s one medium through which they both know how to communicate: Song.
REVIEW:
Let me start off with saying when I picked up this book for review it was because for some reason I was intrigued by the the blurb and I just like books about music. Where I have had the opportunity to read a couple of great ones in this particular genre, I was excited to see where this one would bring me.
And boy oh boy did it grab me! Let me state it simply…what a fantastic read!
This book grabbed me from the beginning, which I wasn’t particularly happy with as it was like 2 am when I started it! And it didn’t let me go. I read for a couple of hours not being able to put it down and started back up right away when I woke up, up to the point where I am now sitting at my desk writing this review.
It is very easy to connect with main character Roland, but I have to say this book isn’t just about Roland and/or Jay for that matter. Roland’s teammate Logan is just as interesting and likable there in the background. I really liked him! Then there is the rival band there whom are familiar with each other and they sure seem to have some interesting stuff there going on as well…at least in my head they have.
Jay is a whole story in of himself. He is mysterious, captivating and surprising. Obviously there is a lot more on him that you realize at first. During this story we get some glimpses but it definitely leaves you wanting to know more and dig to the bottom of it.
The attraction between Roland and Jay is definitely there, written out nicely and enjoyable from the meeting up to the evolvement of their “relationship.” That includes the sexual attraction for sure.
I don’t want to go to much in details because the story definitely tells itself as I mentioned. It grabs you and makes you want to keep reading, which is one of the things I for one think settles for a great read.
If I have to say one thing and I need to be careful to not get spoilery so to speak, the ending left me unsettled or should I say worried. Thankfully the book is listed as Fighting Chance book one, so let’s just hope the author has the next book out soon, at least for my peace of mind.
Hightly recommended.
