Everybody needs to be rescued sometime.
Veterinarian Mitchell Brannigan gets off to a rocky start with his new neighbor when someone calls the town to complain about the noise. Mitchell runs a shelter for rescue dogs, and dogs bark. But when he goes to make peace, he meets Beau Pfister and his fussy baby daughter, Jessica… and starts to fall in love.
Beau moved out to the country to get away from his abusive ex-husband, but raising an infant alone, with no support network, is lonely and exhausting. The last thing he expects is a helping hand from the neighbor whose dogs he complained about.
Mitchell understands what it’s like to live in fear of your ex, and he’s determined to help Beau move on. But when an unseen menace threatens the shelter and Beau, it becomes apparent that he hasn’t dealt with his own demons.
With each other and a protective Chihuahua for support, Mitchell, Beau, and Jessica could make a perfect family. Mitchell won’t let anything happen to them.
But who’s going to rescue him?
REVIEW:
I had to read this when the author mentioned that “This story was inspired by a dog rescue organization here in Carlisle.”
Beau Pfister just wants some peace and quiet. Every since is best friend Amy was killed by a drunk driver three weeks earlier and named him sole guardian he has been trying his best to be the best dad he can be to four-month-old Jessica. But those dogs at the next farm over just won’t stop their blasted barking. To top it off Jessica has become more and more fussy and suffering from explosive diarrhea. When his neighbor, Mitchell Brannigan – the town vet, comes to apologize Beau discovers that he has inadvertently switched to a non-lactose free formula. Mitchell sees how tired the beautiful man is and invites him to a stress-free home-cooked dinner at his place to make amends for his dog rescue center. The two men are wary of each other, having suffered at the hands of their abusive ex’s, but begin to forge a friendship. But can they be more than that? Can they even learn to trust again? And what’s up with all the weird happenings going on all of a sudden?
I really like both these guys and really loved the chemistry they both had. I felt for them too. Both had become how they were from their past rough experiences at the hands of the men they thought they were in love with. I will say, the lack of trust and constant questioning of themselves became a bit over redundant. I got that they had experienced and suffered through both physical and mental abuse. I’m not saying that they should just brush it off. But I felt like they would try and then question everything. I also think being with someone who understands what you suffered through and is telling you they are having a hard time should have been a stepping stone. I got that they were hesitant and they were being thrown into stressful situations left and right. But, at some point, especially after they became intimate, they needed to learn that the other was nothing like their ex’s.
The animal rescue part was touching. The way humans treat other humans and animals with such violence and neglect repulses me. We are a family that have raised many rescue dogs and cats. Our daughter volunteered at one her whole senior year. We had to finally stop her from bringing home another rescue. I loved that Mitchell turned his family farm into a rescue center.
This was a nice, sweet yet slightly suspenseful read with a feel-good ending.
