As I write this post I have a piano tuner working in the background. It’s very cool seeing the inside of a piano, and how everything works.
Part of being my own publisher is fine tuning the formatting of my books. I use vellum to format my books. I hadn’t used a Mac before I started on my indie publishing journey, and was lucky enough to be given an older one to see if I liked it. When it died last month I got myself a lovely refurbished Macbook Air which I love. I still use a Windows PC as my main one, but I use the Mac for vellum, which doesn’t run on Windows, and also find it much more stable for video calls. It’s also lightweight so great for taking out, and as a backup for when Windows does its, ‘I’m going to update for several hours because you have things you need to do…’
One of the fun parts of formatting is the multitude of choices for how the book will look inside. There are choices for not only scene breaks and chapter headings, but also front and back matter. It’s taken me a while to settle on a template for that, and also how that will differ slightly for books in a series.
I decided early on that I wanted the ‘Also By’ at the front, and then have blurbs for other books in the series in the back of the books. In the case of The Sleepless City, I’ll be linking to the original series in the spin off books so readers can easily find how everything fits together, and how their story started. Elizabeth and I also have a spiel for the spin offs so that readers will know they are reading something set in our shared world.
I’m enjoying having control over that kind of thing, and although it was a bit daunting at first, especially with decisions like what size paperbacks? Matte or glossy covers? I now have a pile of step by step notes for both Amazon and Ingram Spark so I don’t stress every time I go to upload a book.
The first time is the scariest, and I still don’t do this often enough but that will change the more books I have out there…. and because I want to have my paperbacks available not only on Amazon, they will available wide, even when the ebooks are in KU.
Family and Reflection, Book 3 of The Sleepless City series I wrote with Elizabeth Noble is now out in paperback! It’s also available from Amazon, and in KU.

When a rebel werewolf and a vampire thief fall in love, only one thing is certain—trouble.
For as long as Lucas Coate can remember, werewolves have been taught to mistrust vampires. Lucas is an exception—he has close friends who are vampires. The werewolf pack in Boggslake—and their leader, Jacob Coate—have made it clear that Lucas’s association with vampires is barely tolerated, and another transgression will be his last. When Lucas finds out about the plague of werewolf deaths in the area, he wants to help even though his own life may already be in danger.
Declan has been away from Boggslake for ten years, but he isn’t surprised to learn that the internal politics of the Supernatural Council haven’t changed for the better. When a series of burglaries hit close to home soon after he arrives, Declan—a vampire and professional thief—is their prime suspect, although for once, he isn’t responsible. With the council keeping secrets, no one is safe. Time is running out, and for Lucas and Declan, everything is about to change.
