Book Description
Red sky at morning, sailors take warning.
Taylor is an actor on a show called According to Us and Everett is one of his costars. They’re best friends until one day, after filming a kiss on set, their relationship changes into something unexpected. Fans of the show have wanted their characters to be together for years. Only after the kiss is cut from the show does that relationship seem like a possibility.
Unfortunately, Taylor is engaged, and after he develops feelings for Everett, he must make a choice—his fiancée, or his best friend.
Everett has loved Taylor for years. Their kiss is something he will cherish forever. But is it the only moment they’ll have together?
After someone finds out about their feelings for each other, Taylor and Everett take to the sea for an adventure. They must learn to navigate the waters of their new relationship and survive a potentially deadly storm before finding true happiness.
Taylor held Everett’s gaze. The scene wasn’t meant to be so intense, but this always happened when it was just the two of them on screen.
A voice interrupted their moment.
“Kiss him.”
George could be a real pain in the ass when he wanted to be. Today was one of those days. Taylor was sick of it and he knew Everett must be sick of it as well.
“Kiss,” shouted George from behind the cameraman.
“Would you shut up?” snapped Everett.
The director shot George a nasty look. “Are you drunk?” he asked.
George got away with everything because he was six-three and impossible to embarrass. Taylor and Everett were a bit shorter, and if George was loud, then Everett was silent. Taylor fell somewhere in the middle, and because of that, he was able to be friends with both of them.
Everett clenched his jaw. It had been going like that all day.
“We can ask him to leave the set,” said Taylor.
“No,” said Everett. “He’d love the idea of being kicked off set. We’d never hear the end of it.”
“Don’t make him beg,” said George.
“That’s it,” said Taylor. “Leave.” He pointed to the door.
“Cut,” yelled the director. “George, walk it off and sober up.”
George cackled as he left the set.
Taylor turned to Everett. “You okay?” he asked.
“He thinks this is funny,” said Everett.
“I know.”
“Why doesn’t he give you this kind of shit?”
Taylor shrugged. “We’ve known each other longer?”
Everett made a face. “If he makes one more joke about me being gay, I’m going to hit him.”
“Just ignore him,” said Taylor.
“And how should I do that?” asked Everett. “When he’s shouting over my lines, how do you suggest I ignore him?”
“I don’t know,” answered Taylor.
“If we’re going to film the kiss next week, he can’t be here.”
“He doesn’t know about the kiss.”
“That explains why he hasn’t given me shit about it yet.”
“I can make sure he’s not here for it,” said Taylor. “But I know he’s going to find out about it.”
“I don’t know why we’re doing the kiss,” said Everett. “They’re not going to let it air.”
Taylor didn’t say anything. He’d been thinking about the kiss since the director had pitched the idea. It wasn’t in the script and it wasn’t on anyone else’s radar. A few people knew, but everyone else was in the dark.
It wasn’t a big, intimate scene. It was just a kiss. But they were preparing for it as if they were going to actually have sex in front of the cameras.
Taylor was nervous. Everett and George had become his best friends. The idea of kissing one of them was bizarre.
“Places,” called the director.
Taylor tried to focus and get back into character.
Everett never seemed to have trouble getting in and out of character. He didn’t goof around on set, either. He was a professional and Taylor admired him for it.
“From Taylor’s last line,” said the director. “Action.”
* * * *
Everett and Taylor rode back to the hotel together. They were filming several hours away from the usual set. Their characters were supposed to be on vacation, so they needed to use a different lot.
They entered the hotel.
“Hey,” said Everett. “I was thinking about next week.”
“Yeah?” asked Taylor.
“About the kiss.”
“What about it?”
“I know sometimes actors practice, um…” He trailed off.
“Oh,” said Taylor. “Like, practice kissing?”
“Yeah. You know, so it’s less awkward when they’re filming.”
“You mean we practice on our own? Without the crew around?”
Everett nodded, a hint of pink rising in his cheeks.
“So, you think we should try that?” asked Taylor.
“If you want to,” said Everett.
“Now?” Taylor wanted him to say yes.
“We can try it now if you want.”
“Okay,” said Taylor. “My room or yours?”
“Let’s go to your room.”
They made their way to Taylor’s room.
Taylor closed the door behind them. “How do we do this?” asked Taylor. “I mean, are you going to kiss me, or should I kiss you?” He felt lightheaded all of a sudden.
“I can kiss you,” said Everett.
“Wait,” said Taylor. “Should I tell Maria?”
“Why?”
“I don’t know. I’m kissing someone else.”
“You can if you want to,” said Everett. “But we’re just practicing. It’s not cheating.”
“Right. Yeah, that’s true.”
It wasn’t true. This absolutely counted. The fact that Taylor was reluctant to tell Maria was his first clue. But he ignored his conscience and took a step closer to Everett.
“This is just for practice,” said Everett.
Taylor nodded.
“I’m going to kiss you now,” said Everett.
Taylor stood still.
Everett came closer.
Suddenly, the door swung open. Taylor and Everett jolted away from each other.
“What are you guys doing?” asked George from the doorway.
“Do you ever knock?” snapped Taylor.
“Am I interrupting something?” asked George.
Everett rolled his eyes and left the room without saying anything.
George raised an eyebrow. “What’s wrong with him?”
“We were rehearsing,” said Taylor.
“Without me?”
“You aren’t in the scene.”
“I am now,” said George.
“We were in the middle of something.”
“What? Or is it some kind of big gay secret?”
“You need to cool it with the gay jokes,” said Taylor.
“C’mon, I’m just kidding around.”
“Yeah, but it’s starting to get to Everett.”
“That guy can’t take a joke.”
“Maybe your jokes aren’t funny.”
“Are you mad at me?” asked George.
“A little,” answered Taylor.
“I’m sorry.”
“You should apologize to Ev.”
“You really think he’s mad?”
“Yeah.”
George huffed. “Fine, I’ll apologize for being so funny.”
“I’m serious.”
“All right, all right. I’ll tell him tomorrow on set.”
“Good,” said Taylor.
“What are you doing for the rest of the night?”
“I’m going to bed.”
“You guys are no fun at all.”
