REVIEW:
Sebastian was a child when he first met Alex. However, he is blessed with the touch of magic. That is when Sebastian discovers that his immediate future is out of his hands. With little choice and broken-hearted, Sebastian does what is expected of him. He leaves his childhood home and his heart, to learn magic. Years later, he returns under sad times churning over memories, wondering if what was broken can be mended.
The Tree of Dragon Tears is a short novel/novella (35k) written in the present tense from the viewpoints of Sebastian and Alex. It is the debut novel from this author, and it is clear that Ruby has a talent for projecting emotions as this story pulls at the heartstrings. Worldbuilding is enough to form a picture in the minds-eye.
Sebastian and Alex are two lovely men whose paths into adulthood were destined to be different. But, like the blurb says, when Sebastian returns to Strathmore, recollections come flooding back.
The story is memory-heavy. As we hear from two sides where many memories are shared, there is the illusion of repetition of some events. While I understand the necessity to stick closely to the primary personalities, it would have been nice to replace some of that with more insight elsewhere – especially as magic is what separated them, and Sebastian seems rather accomplished. As the novel stands, sex and memory fill much of the page, and it would have been nice to expand the present somewhat.
The overall cast is small, Jazz is a staple personality of many books, being the woman who nudges things along, but Theo has a heart-melting quality about him that I adored.
As already said, the story is emotional, and it is impossible not to be taken along on the waves with them. I believe that this author is one to watch out for in the future. The Tree of Dragons Tears is an enjoyable, good, better than average story that contains two loveable mains and a father who is a scene-stealer.
