A new case won’t solve Parker’s old problems…
Parker Ferro needs a vacation. His boyfriend is MIA on a high profile murder investigation, the fae courts have him on call at all hours, and he’s still cleaning up the mess from his last big case. Of course that’s nothing compared to the demands of the debt he owes the spirit of San Amaro.
So when a wealthy new client contacts him to locate a stolen a fae artifact, Parker’s hoping for a simple job. That the artifact in question looks eerily similar to the one that got him involved with a notorious criminal and almost ruined his life last year has no bearing on the decision, right? Not to mention the thief’s ability to enter high security areas without a trace and a few very suspicious deaths.
As his life continues to spiral out of control, Parker has to juggle what’s most important to him: his relationship, his need for revenge or his life. Then again, no one said becoming the new Windrose would be easy.
REVIEW:
Even though big things happened in the first book, Parker is still trying to adjust – a new role, his old role, a new boyfriend, and people are still dying around him. Oh, yeah, and that huge debt he owes San Amaro, not the town but the entire land below the town, and who’s getting testy waiting for results (what’s a few earthquakes just to remind Parker?).
Park always has a million things going on at once: Being the new Windrose has just piled on the work. He’s had to come to the beck & call of all the Fae royalty, and it’s getting on his nerves. Also, he’s juggling cases, trying to placate the land, a boyfriend who’s is swamped at work, and Parker is try not to be overcome in plotting revenge – an unfulfilled promise to a Fae is not a smart move for a rogue client.
Butler has continued on her excellent continuation of the series. The characters are well-grounded and feel like people you would know. Ok, maybe in an alternate universe but they are faced with the same problems as many – balancing life. There’s a lot going on in this book and, though disparate, some fit together while others are just a poor irritation to Parker’s and Nick’s lives. There wasn’t going to be a happy ever after with the completion of the first book, but you thought things would get better, but some things don’t change. Parker is still trying to eek out a living, improved though it may be by being the Windrose and having a house that can open a door to basically anywhere in either of the realms. Oh, and another thing – did I mention a demon cat? Really, an evil shadow cat from another realm – not the friendliest of beasts to have to figure out what to do with it.
The events of the last book have left everyone a bit nervous and things need to be tied up. On top of that, unbeknownst to pretty much everyone but Parker, the land of San Amaro is ready for it’s favor returned and is constantly reminding him and the town with its quakes.
Can he solve the issue of the San Amaro? The next round of murder happening? Can he get the just deserts from his client who screwed him over? And will Fae royalty stop bothering about petty affairs?
Parker’s got to keep it all together to keep his sanity. And we get to have the joyous ride along with him. I can’t tell you how exciting it is to discover this author – she is doing great writing and I can’t wait to see where she goes next – in this series and further works.
