A Chat with Lucas Vallois from the Unbreakable Bonds Series
By Jocelynn Drake
To change things up a little bit, I thought I’d imagine what it would be like to sit down with one of the main characters from the Unbreakable Bonds series and have a little chat. Lucas Vallois is a self-made billionaire who is driven to not only be the very best at everything he does, but also protect the family he has made. His first appearance was in Shiver, where he found trouble and the man who would be the love of his life.
It was easy to spot Lucas Vallois as he strode across Fountain Square in downtown Cincinnati. The tall, handsome man in the bespoke tailored suit walked like a man who knew he was the king of his domain. And he considered Cincinnati his domain. He was part or full owner of a number of restaurants, hotels, and nightclubs around the cities. It was my understanding that he had his fingers in a few other pies as well, but the man refused to share all of his secrets with me.
A few years had passed since we’d last met, and that time had been kind to him. Yes, there were a couple new lines to his face and a little more silver at his temples, but his eyes seemed warmer and his expression less harsh. That had to be the happy result of life with his husband, Andrei.
“You’re on time,” Lucas observed as soon as he reached me in front of the Tyler Davidson fountain.
“Smart ass. I’m not always late. You didn’t bring Andrei along?”
Lucas shook his head. “I thought I’d field this one. When you show up, my friends and I find trouble. I’m done with Andrei being shot at.”
“Harsh. I also made sure that you got married.”
“And that would be the reason why I’m even meeting with you for coffee.”
Cause a little chaos and mayhem in a character’s life and they don’t ever let you forget it.
“Where shall we go for coffee?”
Lucas’s grim expression broke, and he smirked as he led me across Fountain Square and down Walnut Street toward the Aronoff Center for the Arts. I knew where he was going at that point. Rialto. Ian’s famous and fabulous restaurant.
“You thought we’d go anywhere else?”
I shrugged. “I know how evil you can be. Ian working today?”
“Tonight. You’ll have to make a return visit if you want to see him.”
“Evil,” I muttered, but I didn’t really mean it.
The Italian restaurant was a glittering gem of the city. The place for dinner, and judging by the line to get in, the place for lunch as well. We paused only for a second at the hostess booth before she was leading us to a booth toward the back of the restaurant. Clearly, we’d been expected.
A server dressed in an immaculate white shirt and black slacks was on the heels of the hostess, taking our order for coffee and a small snack.
“So, what has brought you back to town? You promised no more trouble,” Lucas started as soon as we were alone again.
“An author really gets no love from her characters. I think Rinda and I took very good care of you, Snow, Rowe, and Ian.”
With narrowed eyes, Lucas lifted one hand and started ticking off on his fingers, “We were shot at, businesses were burned, loved ones were beaten, there were explosions and car chases around the city. Not to mention any of us could have easily gone to jail for any of that insanity.”
I didn’t flinch. I met his gaze and lifted my hand, counting off as well. “Andrei, Jude, Noah, and Hollis,” I steadily replied, listing not only his husband, but the beloved partners of his closest friends.
Lucas relaxed in his seat again and sighed a little. “Yes, true. You have me there, though Hollis is not helping your case that much.”
I pointed at him. “Hollis is good for Ian and you know it.”
“Debatable,” Lucas muttered, but I wasn’t buying it. Ian was happy with Hollis and that was all that mattered to Lucas.
“Of course, Rowe continues to find trouble with his boys at Ward Security, but Rowe is a magnet for trouble. That’s not necessarily my fault.”
Lucas didn’t look convinced.
“I guess, I wanted to come back after all this time to ask you something.”
“What’s that?”
“Was it worth it?”
Lucas’s brow furrowed as if he didn’t completely understand me.
“Eight books, four short story collections, and even more random shorts just like this one. Like you listed—explosions, car chases, shootings, and countless trips to the hospital. But I’ve seen the wedding pictures and heard the vacation stories. Was it all worth it the end? Would you do it all over again to have what you and your friend have now?”
For the first time since we’d met today, Lucas’s face broke into a rarely seen broad grin. “For the happily ever after we’ve achieved? Yeah, in a heartbeat. No hesitation. Andrei is my everything. I cherish every memory I have with him, even the bad ones. He’s given me a life I never could have dreamed of. A family I never thought possible. Jude makes Snow happier than I’ve ever seen him. Rowe would never be complete with Noah. And yes, Hollis is truly perfect for Ian.”
“I’m glad,” I murmured, feeling some old worry fall from my shoulders.
“You and Rinda made us walk through all the levels of Hell, but then you made a heaven on earth. It was a fair trade off.” He paused, eyes narrowing again. “But you are done, right?”
“Yep, your happily ever after is safe.”
