REVIEW:
We are finally getting Holt and Brax’ story in this installment, and this one plays out a bit differently than the previous books. Rather than picking up where the previous story left off, we go back 14 or so years to when Holt and Brax met. These early days were my favorite part of the story.
Fast forward to present day where we know Holt was married and had a child with Amelia. I’ve seen some people saying this book could be read as a stand alone, and I suppose that is technically the case. However, there is a lot of backstory surrounding this family, not the least of which involves Holt (Hawes’ twin), his position in the family, how and why he ended up in the military and, of course, his time with Amelia. So, it is my recommendation that you start at the beginning. The entire story is really good (although I skipped the last one as it centered around Helena) so you won’t regret taking the time to do so.
As for this story, while I enjoyed the beginning, it does take a while before we are immersed back into Fog City with the rest of the family, but when we do, the focus turns somewhat back on the family. Holt and Brax’ friendship spans over 14 years, and it doesn’t fully form into a relationship until much later in the story. To be honest, I was a bit disappointed they didn’t have more screen time together. As it was, I think there were only two, maybe three sex scenes. Things get a bit crazy as the story progresses with someone after Brax, and the last half of the book involves that mystery and the family trying to work it out.
This was definitely not my favorite book in this series, but I love this family and seeing them all working together was very satisfying and made up for not getting to see much of Holt and Brax actually together. Hopefully we will see more of that in the future. I’m a bit fan of Ms. Reyne’s work and am already looking forward to the next offering.
