It’s been a long road to recovery since FBI Agent Cal Riggs and his hacker boyfriend Hunter Walsh’s last showdown with the treacherous Justin Barnes. His betrayal during False Flag left Cal and Hunter scarred and shaken. As their friends Sam Dupre and Rob Crawford dealt with domestic terrorism in Olympia during Penetration Test, Hunter and Cal fought to regain a sense of normalcy that never materialized.
The Bureau under the Trump Administration takes a punitive attitude toward Cal’s passion of fighting white nationalism, and his employment there grows less tenable by the day. Meanwhile, Hunter deals with the uncertainty of Barnes’s continued freedom by taking extreme steps to enhance the security of the condo he shares with Cal. No part of their lives has escaped Barnes’s poisoned touch.
When a shady corporate lawyer shows up on the doorstep while Cal’s at work, Hunter takes the meeting and discovers Barnes’s plan B: In his absence, he wants to bequeath his mercenary company, Dark Sun, to his former FBI partner and lover, no other than Callum Riggs. But what is Cal going to do with Barnes’s mercs? Can he really leave the Bureau he’s been part of since graduation?
But life in the private sector is dangerous, too. Enemies hide in plain sight in Dark Sun’s every office, and there’s no knowing who still supports Barnes and his deadly extremist agenda. Is the mercenary company an olive branch from Barnes to the men he betrayed, or is this the honeypot that will secure their demise?
CW: Violence, brief sexual violence (not between MCs; no rape), white nationalist terrorism
REVIEW:
I don’t even know where to start. Shew. This book has given me the biggest book hangover. I have loved this series from book 1 and it just keeps getting better with each book. More suspense, more things to fight for and of course, more Hunter getting into trouble lol.
This one hit some hard points though. And I also love how it’s set-up to hopefully have a 5th book?? Please. Pretty please lol. I had a feeling that after reading the last book and the way things ended, this was going to be a rough one. And you definitely need to read these in order if you haven’t. But I knew this one would have issues of possible PTSD or things like that. And I knew Barnes had something up his sleeve. So I had a strong feeling it was going to be an intense ride and I was right. It was.
But we met some new characters, things are changing and Cal and Hunter have become so close. And for both of them, that’s a huge thing. Hunter because of his past and the side of the law he sometimes slide on. And Cal, because he’s the knight in shining armor type, and he’s had to learn there are a lot of gray areas in life that many hide in. Hunter has had to shatter the rose glasses, so to speak, and this time, I think it was the worse case of having to do so.
But I love how much it’s brought them close together and how far they’ve come. Shoot, before you even mention commitment or marriage or anything of that tone, and Hunter would have ran like his butt was on fire. He’s grown now too. No, they don’t get married in this one, but that’s all I’m saying on that matter. You need to read to find out.
I think the hardest part for me in this was how bad I felt for Cass and Hunter. Even Rory. They all had a role in things and it left them with a very bad taste in their mouths and feeling like a stain on their very souls. But unfortunately in this world, there are times when one evil is less evil than another. If that makes sense. And you have to pick your battles. And all of them had to learn a VERY hard lesson in this one. It may have left them battle worn and a little more than weary of the world, but together they learned they can face things head on.
I really hope there’s a 5th coming. There are WAY too many loose ends in this one. And I want to see a few get what’s coming to them. You know the saying about karma…….
Another big recommendation from me. If you guys haven’t read this series, you need to. Seriously.
