Shepard Smokey Colson –
When a man I revere and his wife are killed in a freak auto accident in Greece, something feels off about the accident. He’d been my savior when I was at my lowest, and if it hadn’t been for Saber, I’d have likely not lived to see the sunrise the day after being dishonorably discharged from the Army. That great man put me on the path toward a new life and saved my old one in the process.
My sense of honor and gratitude push me to go to Georgia to offer support to his son, Parker Howzer, and any assistance I can to help him through his grief. What will it take to repay my debt to Saber? I didn’t anticipate it might take my heart.
##
Parker Buckley Howzer –
With one phone call, I’m an orphan again, but this time, there is no one to love me through the pain. On top of that, someone is looking for something belonging to my parents that they believe I possess. How can I find it when I don’t even know what to look for?
I didn’t expect Shepard Colson to burst onto the scene like an avenging angel from heaven. He somehow knows I’m in danger and vows to keep me safe, but at what cost to both of us? Whether I’m ready or not, my life as an unknown chef is about to change, but I didn’t anticipate just how much.

“You hungry? I have coffee and sandwiches,” I announced, seeing him look my way.
“Do you prefer Shepard or Smokey?” Parker asked randomly as he went to his suitcase and pulled out a pair of electric-blue bikini briefs, making me lightheaded. I turned away to keep from jumping the guy like a fucking caveman while I was trying to remember what the fuck he’d asked me. Unfortunately—or fortunately—I could see his reflection in the window and felt like I might not be able to keep my cool much longer. I needed a little distance, for sure.
“Uh, sorry?” I offered as a lame rebuttal. The white towel fell to the floor, and the blue briefs that covered his ass so fantastically had my heart accelerating to a dangerous pace.
“I asked if you preferred to be addressed by your given name, Shepard, or if you preferred your codename? I don’t want to offend you,” Parker responded with a smirk as he pulled on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, taking in my reflection in the mirror he was facing. The sarcastic grin on his face let me know I wasn’t very good at hiding my attraction to him. I had hoped as long as I didn’t acknowledge it, I’d be fine. Yeah, I’m an idiot!
“Uh, I guess I’m used to being called Smokey, I mean, based on my job. Only my family calls me Shepard or Shep. Lots of people just call me an asshole,” I joked, trying to relieve some of the mounting sexual tension, which was likely only on my part.
Parker Howzer walked over to me and touched my arm, setting off tingles on my skin, the likes of which I’d never felt in my life. His gentle touch nearly put me on my knees. Why on earth would the touch of someone’s hand on my bare skin make me lose my mind? That wasn’t normal, right?
“I can’t imagine why. You’re one of the kindest men I’ve ever met. You were in the Army, but you got out unharmed, right?” Parker asked.
I sure as fuck didn’t want to discuss that shit, so I pointed to the various breakfast delights I’d brought with me. “Eat before it gets cold. They’re not as good when they’re cold, I’m sure.” I took my coffee and walked over to the window, trying like hell to get the blood to circulate to my brain from my aching dick, all the while fighting to keep my wits about me.
Parker nodded, but he smelled the sandwich and pushed it away, taking a sip of coffee. “I’ll have to fix you a proper breakfast at some point, Shepard. That’s for shit.” He wisely tossed his into the trash. I picked up mine and took a bite, quickly spitting it into a napkin and throwing it into the garbage, as well. Anything had to be better than that rubbery crap.
I finished my coffee and tossed the cup, noticing it wasn’t so great, either. I needed more, better coffee and fresh air because I could smell Parker’s intoxicating scent across the room. It was fucking with my head, so it was time for a change of venue.
I grew up in the rural Midwest before moving to the East Coast with a dashing young man who swept me off my feet, and we’ve now settled in the desert of Nevada. I write M/M contemporary romance, subgenres: sweet low angst, age-gap, cowboys, mysteries, and military/mercenary to name a few. I am a firm believer in “Love is Love” regardless of how it presents itself, and I’m a staunch ally of the LGBTQIA+ community.
I have a loving, supportive family, and I feel blessed by the universe and thankful every day for all I have been given. I’m old enough to know how to have fun, but too old to care what others think about my definition of a good time. In my heart and soul, I believe I hit the cosmic jackpot. Cheers!
