A reaction to almost dying or gay awakening?
I don’t fit in anymore. Not at home. Not at school. And this jittery feeling—like I’m living someone else’s life—needs to stop. Nothing makes sense until I confront Caleb Patterson at his locker. Arguing with him makes me feel alive again.
I have a girlfriend, but Caleb lights me up like he’s flipped a switch. He’s patient and sweet. And I want to kiss him until I break his world apart and reach the person underneath.
I’m tired of labels and playing by the rules. But living my life on my terms is more difficult than I imagined.
All I want is to be his everything.
REVIEW:
This is a little gem of a book. It had me hooked from the first sentence. The narrator, Rob Porter, is a great guy. He’s utterly confused about everything after a near death experience turned his life on its head, but is still warm, funny and insightful.
Rob experiences quite a lot of shocks during the course of the book, most of them relating to his girlfriend, Carli and the boy he becomes more and more certain he wants to be his boyfriend, Caleb Patterson. Of course, he doesn’t like Caleb, but we all know how hate can slide into passion so easily.
Being teenagers, passion is always simmering beneath the surface and the author has an excellent way of expression this with intense moments and touches that would, in other circumstances not be sexual at all. There’s no sex, just teenage hormones, angst and genuine caring.
All of the characters in this book are very well rounded, even those who don’t appear very often. I particularly like Jade, who leaped off the page and grabbed me.
Although there is angst, as I said previously, but on the whole, it’s not a hormone-ridden book, but a gentle story told through a series of warm scenes that range from home reconstruction, to an encounter in the kitchen at a party.
At only ninety-five pages, the book is short and sweet and very much worth the read. It is firmly YA so if you’re looking for hot steamy sex, or characters who act in a mature way, this is not the book for you. But if you like well written characters working through their issues with humour, and scorching hot moments, sometimes without even touching, then this is the book for you. I can thoroughly recommend it.
