Meet Red

 

This could be a location like that. Built for evil. Or it could be a naturally occurring phenomenon…that someone built a barn around?

 

I wouldn’t know until I got inside.

 

As I kept walking toward the door, Janie grabbed my arm. “I don’t think this is a good idea,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I don’t want to go in there.”

 

I turned around to smile reassuringly at her, and rubbed my hands lightly on her upper arms. “It’s all right. You stay out here. I’m going to have a quick look. Okay?” I caught her eyes and she nodded quickly. My grin widened, and I turned back around—

 

Only to come face-to-face with someone who definitely hadn’t been there a few seconds before.

 

“Jesus fuck!” I shouted as I stumbled back and, once again, fell on my ass. At least I didn’t squeal this time. Behind me, there was a squawk and the flapping of wings that grew more distant as Janie escaped.

 

I scrambled away from the man looking down at me, my heart pounding in my throat. He was about my height, but way broader than I would ever be. He wore a plain heather-gray T-shirt that highlighted how broad he was, and jeans, which were snug enough to highlight, uh, other things. His red-tipped dark hair hung over his narrow, hooded eyes, and his tawny skin had a rosy undertone, one I didn’t think was from exertion.

 

This had to be Red.

 

“You’re not supposed to be here.” His voice was softer than I’d expected, almost melodic. Like we were having a friendly, casual conversation, instead of him warning me off like an overzealous security guard.

 

“I didn’t see any signs.” Putting some of my vampiric strength to use, I hopped back to my feet. “What’s with the appearing out of the dark, man? You scared the shit out of my friend.”

 

Red’s eyes flicked over my shoulder, as though he were only now registering that one of his confrontees had fled. “I’ll take you back to your yurt.” Without waiting for my response, he stepped forward and grabbed my arm above my elbow.

 

When our skin touched, there was a…a spark. Not an actual one, but one I felt reverberating through my flesh and blood and magic. Startled, I jerked my arm away. “Hey, buddy. I didn’t give you permission to touch me.”

 

Even if I kind of wanted him to again.

 

No. No, Evan. Bad idea.
