Hold the Door By Vinni George
Open Doors, Book 1
One hidden crush.
One bunch of plastic mistletoe.
One alcohol-fueled kiss.
One set of taillights as Max Martino left town.
Sixteen years later…
Sam Addison hates change, and his company’s new merger is stretching him to his limit. When Sam finds out an older, hotter, and amazingly talented Max Martino is part of the acquisition, he knows the only way to keep his sanity is to avoid Max—and their history—at any cost.
Max never planned to settle down, but recently he’s been pining for roots. A new job, a new city, and a second chance with Sam makes the thought of staying in one place exciting for the first time ever.
But the harder Max pushes, the farther Sam runs, sometimes literally, and Max begins to wonder if Sam can ever let go of the biggest mistake Max ever made—leaving.
But maybe a second chance at forever is as simple as holding the door open for love.

Max pulled away with a final soft kiss and smiled down at me, his eyes glazed. Then he laughed. “Sex in public is not my kink. Not that you’d be able to tell from the way I just mauled you tonight.”
I smiled and squared my shoulders, standing up just a little straighter against the wall. “Then what is your kink?” The words had slipped from my mouth unbidden, and maybe the click I’d felt when Max kissed me for the first time had unlocked something inside me as much as it had tumbled my resolve into place.
Max’s eyes went hot. I saw the fire burning in them even standing as we were in shadow. “You. Particularly you in a pair of board shorts. You, in a pair of board shorts, soaking wet if we want to get really specific.” And my heart dropped, swooping like a seagull diving for a french fry on the pier. I was in big trouble where Max was concerned, and I didn’t care.
I pushed him back a step and used the shield of his body to adjust myself in my jeans. There was no way my erection wouldn’t still be noticeable, but there was a difference between modestly, obviously aroused, and hello, Cincinnati. Max did the same, smoothing his shirt from where my hands had rumpled the fabric. When we were both put back together-ish, he took my hand and laced our fingers together.
“Did you drive?” he asked.
“Nope, I took an Uber,” I said. “I was planning on having a few drinks, and parking down here typically sucks.”
Max let go of my hand and removed his phone from his pocket. He pulled up the Uber app and ordered a ride. As soon as we knew Andash in a red Toyota Corolla was on his way and would arrive in three minutes, he tucked his phone away and grabbed my hand again.
The high from our kisses was starting to subside a bit and rational thought was creeping in. I had a lot I needed to process where Max was concerned, but I also didn’t want to waste any more time living in the past. I enjoyed kissing him. A lot. And I wanted more. I just wasn’t sure where things went from there, but maybe I could be okay without a plan. Maybe I could take things as they came. I could do it in the ocean, and I owed it to myself to try to apply the same principles to my life on land.
I’d gone quiet, and I’d been rubbing the thumb of the hand Max wasn’t holding against my lips. He reached over and stilled my thumb, dropping my hand to my side and replacing my thumb with his. He stroked the pad over my lower lip, and I let my eyes close.
