Grey
I was just a divorced, small town, hardware store owner, and the man most people considered a gentleman. A slip up in my strict routine would send the town gossips into a frenzy. Yet I’d grown up in that town and everyone knew everyone. No secrets were safe, but I carried one that would send my world into chaos if I let it. I was falling for a town transplant and one of my best friends, Sugar. He was everything I wasn’t. Spontaneous, fun, and knew exactly who he was. What would he see in a boring man like me?
Sugar (Shug)
I was that fat, nonbinary person who hadn’t known the inside of a closet in my life. With a mom like mine, she taught me to never live with regrets, but I had a massive one. I fell in love with my straight, gentlemanly best friend. Grey was everything I wasn’t. Thankfully, he was clueless, but our shared friend group wasn’t. How long could our friends stay silent in a town as small as ours?

“Girls want those things. Women want someone who treats them well. Who they can count on. Maybe I should set you up on some blind dates.” I schooled my features not to show my dislike of that idea, but the horror on his face made me feel better.
“No, I’m sure you’d do an amazing job, but no.”
“Wow, you even turned me down politely. You, sir, are the mythical unicorn, the rare gentleman.”
“I’m sure there’s plenty out there, but what do they say? The nice guy always finishes last. People find the bad boy persona more attractive. It’s the danger of it…a hint of the forbidden and unattainable.”
“There could be another connotation for the nice guy finishes last, but I won’t point that out.”
“Wasn’t that a roundabout way of saying it?”
“Perception, my good man. Okay, I’m going to suggest something completely radical. You’ll have to bear with me.”
“What?”
I didn’t know why. Maybe it was pure selfishness on my part, or I was a glutton for punishment. “Undo a top button and cause a wave of people having the vapors.” When he didn’t move, I raised my hands and slipped two buttons free of their holes to expose thick, dark chest chair.
Shug, you will not pet the Bear, do not pet the Bear, Shug. Fuck, I wanted to pet the Bear.
“What are you doing?”
“Causing the scandal of the century, I’m mussing you.”
He could’ve easily fought me off as I undid his cuffs and rolled the sleeves up over strong, furry forearms. A shiver threatened to overtake me when the fingers of first one hand then the other brushed the soft curve of my silk-covered belly. “Men in rolled-up sleeves on their dress-shirts, it’s like modest but oh so dirty,” I purred with a roll of my tongue as I finished and leaned back to survey my work. “One more thing.” I finger-combed his hair to find the neatly combed strands easily tangled into sexy waves.
Oh fuck, that wasn’t my best idea ever. I couldn’t look away from that V of skin and hair exposed by his opened collar. I’d never thought I had a type before; I’d dated femme and masc, skinny and fat. I liked people, and I found the differences and imperfections attractive. Yet Grey was proving me wrong—I had a type. They were masculine, too handsome men with old-fashioned manners. No wonder I was perpetually single. My perfect man was straight.
“Do I pass muster?”
“I may need to fix you. You’ll cause a riot.” I darted a glance around to find men and women looking at him, and I started to reach for him to button his shirt and cover his forearms. His sex appeal was bad enough when he was completely covered. I wondered for the hundredth time what he looked like naked. What was he like when his usual civility disappeared behind closed doors?
