The hard thing about Night Shift is when you realize werewolves are bad news, but people can be worse.
After Night Shift officer Kit Marlow solved the murder of child star Haley Jenkins, he figured he was due a little down time. Maybe even a dinner date with Cade Deacon, the sarcastic security consultant, very good kisser, and werewolf who’d helped with the investigation.
That was before someone in a Night Shift uniform drove them both off the road. With the full moon up the only dinner date Cade is interested in…has Marlow served up on a plate. And not in a sexy way.
It’s the second time that corrupt Night Shift officers have tried to kill Marlow. If he has his way, it will be the last. Problem is he only has twenty-eight days before the next full moon. If he hasn’t identified who wants him dead by then, he’ll have to take to werewolf filled streets with a team at his back he can’t trust.
First things first, though. Get through the next twelve hours alive and uneaten, and hope that if a second date is still on the cards it’s less eventful.
REVIEW:
Note: This is the second book in this series and does not work as a standalone. This series is more of a serial and thus builds on the previous installment.
This book picks up right where the first book left us – with Marlow and Cade in a car that has been driven over the guardrail by a vehicle driven by someone wearing Night Shift gear. And the moon is rising, Marlow is trapped in a car, injured with a werewolf who is about to turn thanks to the moon. He really doesn’t want to be eaten by his potential date 🙁 But Kit is a lot more resourceful than your average guy. Night Shift has prepared him for knowing how to deal with wolves, but without his gear, he’s at a huge disadvantage. Luckily his quick thinking gives him some advantage.
Deacon of course can’t remember what happened while he was a wolf, but he fears the worst. And the SDPD seems to be looking for his help again. Grudgingly he does what he can and he and Marlow forge sort of a new relationship post this latest attempt on their lives. They are determined to get to the bottom of whoever is setting them up, despite being told to stay out of it. Right. Like that was going to happen 😉 I can’t really say much more without spoiling things, but suffice to say that these two are stubborn and tenacious and I can’t see either giving up.
OK. So I saw this was Book 2 of 2 and assumed that this book would complete the story. Nope. Not even close and it ends on another cliffhanger. So if you’re not into that, you may want to wait for the whole series to be published before diving in. I have to confess I wasn’t ready for that either 😉 We do learn a bit more about both Kit and Deacon’s backgrounds – but this is a slow reveal. I’m not sure how many books are in this series, but we find out a lot more about the dirty copy from the Night Shift that tried to kill Kit previously. It’s obvious someone is pulling the strings, but we don’t seem to be any closer to knowing who at the end of this book than we were from the first. We do get some new information about who might be taking over Piper’s old work, but it’s not a given. I’m very curious as to where this will go given that we still don’t know what roles anyone is playing in this dangerous world. It really is bad enough to have to control the wolves, but when the humans can’t be trusted? Well all bets are off. It’s clear that there is someone dirty in the Night Shift but not at all clear who is in control. I sure hope we get more in the next installment. I’m enjoying this series, but I hope we get some resolution soon. Not sure how many installments there will be 🙂 Recommended for urban fantasy fans, mystery fans, police procedural fans and serial fans especially.
