Welcome Gabbi 🙂
Jared
Confession time. I’m lonely.
There, I’ve said it.
One of the many secrets I keep.
See, I have a reputation. I’m the most cheerful person in all of Willow Springs, Vermont.
Okay, maybe not the most cheerful person, but darn close.
I’m a clerk at the Deerbourne Inn, and it’s my job to welcome weary travelers. I’m always there with a quick smile, perhaps an appropriate comment about the weather, and tidbits about the town I’ve adopted as my home. Or maybe it’s that they’ve adopted me.
I’ve watched many guests fall in love. Several of my close friends have fallen hard. But I’m a bystander. A witness. And I’m not jealous. Not much, anyway. Do I want what they have? Well, yes. Am I likely to get it? That might be a problem. There isn’t a huge gay population in Willow Springs. Oh, the town is definitely LGBTQ-friendly, and I’ve been embraced from day one.
I even flirted with a guest a while back. Bold, on my part. But he met someone, and now they’re happily living in Edinburgh. Me? Still a virgin. Did I mention that? I’ve considered hooking up with some guys in Montpelier, but that’s not how I’m built.
And here, season after season, I remain stubbornly single.
Maybe one of these days my luck will change, and I’ll stop being an observer.
Xander
Confession time. I’m lonely.
There, I’ve said it.
One of the many secrets I keep.
See, I have a reputation. I’m the best photojournalist in the business.
Okay, maybe not the best, but darn close.
Now I’ve had the shock of my life and I’ve come to Willow Springs, Vermont to take stock of my life. To re-examine what’s important to me. To write my memoir.
I’ve globetrotted from minor skirmishes to the ghastliest of wars and everything in-between. I’ve photographed iconic moments in the past ten years. Those photos have garnered praise. Those photos have earned me accolades and awards I don’t care about. Those photos have turned the tide of public opinion and have sometimes changed hearts and minds.
Those photos have been born through my blood, sweat, and tears. Okay, more blood than the others. Did I stitch myself up in Syria and keep taking pictures? Possibly. Don’t tell my editor. She’d have a conniption. But I got some great shots, so she’d probably forgive me.
Now, for the first time in years, I’ve stopped. Dead. Well, not dead, per se, but dead in my tracks. I won’t be going back out there. I miss the excitement. And this sleepy town? Everyone is so nice. And cheerful. And intrusive. I’d hoped to fly under the radar, but the clerk at the inn where I’m staying has recognized me.
No big deal, right? Famous last words.
Blurb:
Jared Langford is a happy man. The desk clerk at the Deerbourne Inn knows everyone in his cozy town in Vermont. He is accepted and loved by the community, but he’s missing someone special in his life.
Devastating news has brought journalist Xander Fortier to Willow Springs for some much-needed rest. He’s photographed every major conflict in the world for the last ten years, but being stateside has forced him to reassess the solitary life he’s been living.
Something in Xander’s gruff demeanor calls to Jared’s caring nature. Soon the men are spending time together, but Jared’s kisses might not be enough to keep Xander from leaving. Can the men find a happily ever after if they only have today.
Xander placed the painful reminder inside the folder and then closed it. “Not going to lie, it’s a tough job. I’ve almost broken a couple of times, but I told myself these stories need to be revealed.” He tapped the folder. “A shelter in Baltimore got more funding, so that’s worth something. Donations to aid agencies who were helping the Rohingya increased after journalists shone a spotlight on the tragedy, and the government in Myanmar was called to account for what happened. Sometimes good things can happen.”
“You don’t sound convinced.”
Damn, Jared saw so much. “There are days when it seems futile. Like it seems the world doesn’t care. Like the world is turning its back on those who need help the most.”
Jared rose from his stool.
As Xander turned, his far-too-perceptive host situated himself between Xander’s thighs, then cupped his guest’s cheek.
“If you’re holding a mirror up, then you’ve done your job. If people can’t turn away, you’ve done your job.”
Oh, if only that were true. Life was far more complicated than that. He gently grasped Jared’s hips. “You almost make me believe.”
“I have faith in you.” Jared said the words quickly and with feeling. He ran his hand along Xander’s jaw. He angled in and when he was only an inch away, said, “Let me prove it to you.”
Xander leaned forward, closing the distance. Their lips met and, at first, it was chaste. Just a pressing of lips. Then came the nip at Xander’s lower lip and it was game on. He opened his mouth and welcomed the intruding tongue. Leisurely. A mere exploration. Two men getting to know each other. To see how they fit together.
When the whimper sounded, Xander drew Jared closer and deepened the kiss. Then those seductive hands threaded his hair and tugged. That sent tingles down his spine. He wanted this. Oh, God, he wanted this. And that physical reaction left no doubt of the man’s enthusiastic agreement. But it wouldn’t work. There was so much left unsaid. And Xander didn’t have the right to take what was being offered without being honest.
The chirping of his phone yanked him from the moment of frustrating bliss.
