When Jasper and Gwen reached the coffee cart, Ethan was already there, chatting happily with Matt. It was odd for Jasper to see two disparate parts of his life colliding. While Jasper was aware that Ethan and Matt were close friends, he hadn’t actually seen them together before. He hadn’t mentioned his fascination with Matt to Gwen, so he asked her if she’d grab a table while he got their drinks. He slowed his pace a little to observe Matt and Ethan for a few seconds.
Ethan’s back was to Jasper, but his posture was relaxed, his hands in his pockets. He tilted his head back and laughed at something Matt said. Jasper could see Matt, standing across the counter from Ethan, his eyes sparkling in amusement. Matt was gesticulating with his hands as he spoke, the casual ease he had with Ethan evident.
Jasper felt a little twinge of something unpleasant at the sight of it. Normally, when Jasper and Matt spoke, Matt was fidgeting, his fingers never still. He’d arrange tiny cups of creamer or packets of artificial sweetener. He’d twist a ring on his finger or fiddle with a chain around his neck. He’d shift his weight from foot to foot absently, like his body was trying to calm its nervous energy on autopilot. Why was he so at ease with Ethan? How close were they, really? Shit. Jasper felt his skin heat with irritation and, if he was honest, jealousy. Had Matt slept with Ethan? Were they dating? Ethan was a cute guy, and certainly closer to Matt’s own age.
Jasper reached the coffee cart, so he forced himself to pull his shit together. He put on his best attempt at a cool and cheerful face, and he greeted Ethan with a hug. After they said a quick hello, Matt asked, “Americano?” Jasper looked at him then, and the tiny quirk of Matt’s lips at the corners immediately chased away all the feelings of jealousy from a minute ago. That tiny smile was for him, and it made him feel like he was freaking Captain America or something. Jasper realized, belatedly, that he was also supposed to get Gwen’s drink, so he asked for a latte, too. Jasper couldn’t help admiring Matt as he worked on the beverages, so he was only half-listening to Ethan as he made small talk while they waited. He could see that Ethan was eyeing him suspiciously, so he made an effort to tear his attention away from Matt’s forearms and graceful fingers and focus on his friend.
