I pulled him over to a nook between two booths, the illusion of privacy in the middle of a crowd. I stepped in front of him and placed my hands on his cheeks, drawing his attention. “Hey, what’s going on?” He shook his head slightly. “I…I don’t know. I feel like an imposter, that I’m not who they think I am. I’m not a savior, a leader, a lord.” His eyes flicked up to mine on that last word, before looking away. “But you are, my love. You are the one that saved me. You’ve been saving me since the day we met. You are a leader, I know it’s hard to see from where you stand, but I see people who admire you, not just because of what you are, but because of who you are. You have a big heart, a heart that drives you to put others first, as a leader should.” I rested my forehead on his, wishing so badly to kiss away all the uncertainty he was wrapped in. Unfortunately, the appearance of privacy as we were tucked into a corner, wasn’t the real solitude I wished for, it would have to wait. “As for being a lord, you’ll soon be more than that to the people, our people, that may take some getting used to, but I will be at your side the entire time. I’m proud to have you at my side, Egan. There’s no one else I would want to hold that place.” “How do you do that?” I could feel something lighter, warmer, swirling within him. I leaned back to look into his eyes, happy to see the concern gone. “How do I do what?” “Always say the right things.” At that, one side of his lip tugged up into a crooked smile. “I’m a prince.” I shrugged and winked at him. He shook his head and laughed. “You’re an idiot.” “Yeah, but you love me.” I was grinning just as widely as he was. He was fully back and present with me, the light gleaming and flashing in his eyes once again. Every fear and concern that had been there just a moment ago was pushed aside. I didn’t doubt they lingered deep within him, but for now, he wouldn’t get sucked down with them. We both carried hurts and pain, though they were different for each of us. There was no undoing what had been done, but I was grateful that we had each other to draw us back from the darkness.
