Paramedic Dallas Haynes is between a rock and a hard place. Needing to replace a fallen paramedic, but not wanting anyone else to fill his shoes, he procrastinates until the decision is taken out of his hands. Dallas is less than thrilled when the new medic turns up for his first shift.
Saxon James hopes his first day at Gloucester’s Firehouse Three will be a turning point in his life. Sent packing from his previous job, and branded a troublemaker, this new position is his last chance to get it right. When he receives a frosty reception from his new boss, Dallas, he’s even more upset to find himself attracted to the taciturn man.
The new coworkers are like oil and water from the moment they meet. But the burning desire between them inevitably begins to draw them closer and soften the animosity between the two men.
Finally surrendering to the fiery passion between them, Saxon and Dallas are doused by approaching Hurricane Tess, who has her sights set on Gloucester. Can they band together to save lives in the height of the storm, or will their budding relationship sink in the rising tide?
REVIEW:
Saxon and Dallas make my heart happy. But it took a bit to get there. This is the third book in the Protect and Serve series and is not a standalone – as previous characters play prominent rolls in this book. I would definitely categorize this one as an enemy to lover’s story. Dallas is a paramedic in his brother Ozzy’s fire station and with the death of one of the other paramedics, a replacement needs to be found. This is where the trouble starts…. Saxon has been assigned to Ozzy’s fire station, with no input from Ozzy, as he has been dragging his feet on replacing a beloved member of the fire station. With minimal research into Saxon, Ozzy and Dallas form a less than pleasant opinion. But as with all Pandora stories, Dallas starts to come around and he and Saxon begin a tortured and troublesome journey to their HEA. Saxon has as much of a troubled past as Dallas does. Saxon lost his parents early on as did Dallas. This is where their similarities end. Whereas, Saxon has a brother and sister, Dallas had no siblings. Until he was adopted by the McCoy’s and gained several brothers. Saxon’s sister, an addict, has two little girls, that are the loves of his life. As things begin to blossom in the romance department, tragedy strikes Saxon and his relationship with Dallas may never recover. On top of this, there is the side character of a hurricane that is approaching their town. Will Saxon and Dallas be able to overcome all the outside influences? Will they survive the hurricane? Of course, to find out the answers to these questions, you must read the book.
As always Pandora does a wonderful job of world building and creating intriguing and well-rounded characters. I cannot imagine the sheer volume of research she must do to create such realistic environments. It was all I could do to not crawl into the pages of this story and smack Ozzy and Dallas…. This was another five-star read for me from Pandora. Looking forward to the next book in this series.
