Somewhere around the middle of the afternoon, I was feeding Humphrey again when my doorbell rang. The cats started racing around the room, their tiny paws pounding against the hardwood floor like a mini feline stampede. I stepped around them and went to the door. When I was halfway across, my phone rang.
Tracy. Figures.
I swung the door open, answering the phone at the same time. “Hey, Tracy, let me call you back. I have someone here and—” I took one glance at the gorgeous, dark-haired, blue-eyed man standing on my porch holding a pair of iced coffees from Tracy’s coffee cart, and I lost all power of speech.
Then I heard a soft gagging noise and looked down just in time to see Humphrey choking. Not caring whether Tracy was still on the line, I shoved my phone in my pocket and motioned frantically for the hottie to enter. “Come on in—I have to deal with this.”
I didn’t even pay attention to see if he’d followed me. I pulled Humphrey out of my pocket and lifted him to face level, rubbing his throat to clear whatever he was choking on. The little guy gacked formula directly in my face, which would have been bad enough on its own, except he started oozing out the back end as well. As I held him at arm’s length, liquid crap seeped over the sides of my palm and down my arm.
Naturally, that was when I heard a throat politely clearing. I made eye contact with Mr. Gorgeous. Oh, good, he had followed me in. How special. I braced myself for him to run screaming, but instead, he smiled sympathetically, glancing around the room. “Is there somewhere I can set these down? I’d be happy to give you a hand if you don’t mind pointing out where I can find a cloth or something.”
“No, I can handle it. Why don’t you follow me into the kitchen? I’m sorry. I’m completely rude. I can’t believe I didn’t introduce myself, but yeah… kitty emergencies trump manners. I’m sure you’ll understand if I don’t shake hands? I’m Hunter Riley.”
He smiled, displaying the cutest dimple on his left cheek. “No worries. I’m guessing you forgot you were expecting me? Tracy sent this as an ice-break—fuuuck!” He thrust his hand forward as if he’d forgotten he was holding an iced coffee. He froze halfway there and must’ve clenched his fist because the cup crackled, and the lid popped off. As it went flying, a geyser of iced coffee splashed all over Humphrey and down the front of me.
I peered back and forth between my shirt and the indignantly squawking kitten and did the only thing I could. I started laughing. “The kitchen is this way, Quinn. Welcome to the jungle—I have a feeling you’re going to fit right in. Try not to step on any kittens, okay?”

As an avid reader and big romance fan myself, I love sharing the stories of the different people who live in my imagination. My stories are filled with humor, a few tears, and the underlying message to not give up hope, even in the darkest of times, because life can change on a dime when you least expect it. This theme comes from a lifetime of lessons learned on my own hard journey through the pains of poverty, the loss of more loved ones than I’d care to count, and the struggles of living through chronic illnesses. Life can be hard, but it can also be good! Through it all I’ve found that love, laughter, and family can make all the difference, and that’s what I try to bring to every tale I tell.
I’m a happily married mom with one snarky teenage boy, and three grown “kids of my heart.” I’m more widely known for my mpreg writings as Susi Hawke; this new name is a departure from that. Whether written by Susan or Susi, the books are filled with that all-important love, laughter, and family I mentioned; the only difference is that this name has no male pregnancy. I look forward to sharing my stories with you, and to bringing more romance and laughter into this world that needs it so very badly.
