BLURB:
Victor Bayne never saw himself as husband material, but after an undercover stint as half of a married couple, he’s willing to give it a shot. Jacob Marks was eager to settle down from the get-go, so once Vic popped the question, the wedding should’ve been smooth sailing.
But new evidence has come to light that casts a pall over the whole affair: decades of psychic experimentation and intrigue. Vic would hardly be shocked to discover he’s been an unwitting test subject, but it’s not his name on the roster.
It’s Jacob’s.
Planning a wedding on short notice is challenging enough without a covert investigation. Vic can deal with premarital counseling, floral emergencies, and the world’s most annoying baker—but can he handle what he finds out about his other half?
PsyCop is an ongoing series filled with supernatural action and delightfully awkward humor–with a steady undercurrent of gay romance. It’s best read in order, so if you’re new to the series, start with PsyCop #1, Among the Living…and prepare for a hauntingly good read.
REVIEW:
Vic and Jacob are in full wedding prep mode in this installment. They are attending some type of pre-marital counseling as they had home to Jacob’s family where the wedding will take place. As nothing can be that simple, they are using the trip as an excuse to investigate the issues surrounding Jacob’s background, family history and how it all relates to him possibly being more than just a Stiff. The biggest question they seek an answer to – why were Jacob’s initials in Dr. Kamal’s notebook.
So, while they tackle the exercises given by their counselor, they poke around in search of connections, all while preparing for the upcoming wedding with the help of Jacob’s sister and then Crash and his beaux.
This felt more like a novelette to me, as opposed to a main book in the series. While the Jacob storyline is one of the main topics, this has a greater focus on Vic and Jacob’s relationship, how it has evolved and through the various events, has grown stronger. The counseling activities actually prove more useful than originally intended and helped solidify that these two are more right for each other than ever before.
While this didn’t have the same excitement as the previous books, and it was a bit frustrating at times in the ways they were going about their info seeking, it was a natural progression in the story. Now that they are married and their bond (work and otherwise) has evolved, I’m looking forward to seeing where their adventures take them, what the FPMP has in store and seeing Jacob and Vic becoming an even bigger force to reckon with now that they are working together in a more cohesive manner with the ghosties.
