Nova: I settled in on the battered old sofa shortly after and turned on my laptop, Theo curling up at my feet. I tapped the screen, opened the video chat app, and dialed William, my best friend. We hadn’t spoken in a few weeks and I wanted his advice on something. After two rings, William answered, a trickle of blood trailing from his lip. He was in bed, and next to him was a naked person—alive or dead, I wasn’t entirely sure. “Is he—” I started, raising my eyebrows, but William waved a dismissive hand, jostling his laptop. “No, of course not. Just sleeping.” “Did you—did you feed on a sleeping human?” William grinned, his smile lopsided and warm. “Well, he wasn’t sleeping when I started. You called and I told him to rest.” “And you just happened to have your laptop in bed with you?” William shrugged one shoulder. “Welcome to the age of technology.” “Why did you answer if you were busy?” William shrugged again. “I always answer when you call me, darling. Did you need something?” “Yes, I need your advice on something.” “Well, give me just a moment, and I’ll give you my very best advice.” He placed a hand on his partner’s back, stroking along his shoulder blade. “It’s okay, darling. Wake up, now.” The man stirred and rolled to his side, glancing at the camera. “Nova, this is Joey. Joey, Nova is my oldest friend Nova, who apparently can’t be bothered to call unless he needs something.” Joey rubbed his eyes and nodded. “Hi there.” I snorted and shook my head, rolling my eyes. “I was thinking,” I started. “Never a good sign.” “Thanks. Anyway, about the tavern.” “Mmm, yes. Tell me. Did you finally cave and drink from a patron?” He glanced at Joey and licked his lips hungrily. I shook my head. “Not even a little bit. But Annie—” “The owner?” I nodded. “She told me a few weeks ago that she’s tired of running a bar. Money’s tight and she’s too old to keep it up, she says. I was thinking about buying it, but tonight she told me the bar has been sold. Should I try to find out more about the owner? Maybe buy him out?” “Buy Sheep’s Rest? A bar for humans? Are you out of your mind?”
