“You mean we?”
Jesse chuckled humourlessly. “Yeah, we.”
“You’re not in this alone, Jesse. We’re a team, remember?”
“Yeah.” His voice was strangled. “But it’s my body that’s letting us down.”
“No.” I held him closer still. “Don’t think like that. You could never let me down.”
My heart wrenched as my mate sucked back a sob.
“I know that here,” Jesse said, touching his temple. “But here…” He pressed his hand over his heart. “I feel like I’m incomplete. Like I’ll never be enough. Like I’m broken.”
“Jesse…”
“And I know it’s stupid and irrational and that I’m so much more than a baby-making machine, but every time I go into heat, it’s the only thing I can think about. I want to have your baby so badly, Isaac, but I’m terrified I’ll never be able to.”
“Never try to belittle the way you’re feeling,” I said gently. “It doesn’t matter if it makes sense to anyone else as long as it makes sense to you.” I rubbed his shoulder. “But for what it’s worth, I don’t think you’re broken or incomplete, and you will always be enough for me. More than enough. I love you, Jesse. Nothing is going to change that, I promise.”
Jesse sucked in a breath as he buried his face against my chest. “My head knows that.”
“Hopefully, your heart will catch up soon.”
My mate coughed out a garbled sound that was somewhere between a sob and a laugh.
