Keeping Casey by Amy Aislin
Keeping Him, Book 1
Casey Preston is the guy with the plan. The list-maker. The one who micromanages his own life.
Spontaneously offering to be his best friend’s fake boyfriend to get Ethan’s annoying team captain off his back?
That’s not thinking things through. It’s not even smart given Casey’s been fighting his feelings for Ethan for years.
Ethan Rain just wants to play hockey and get his college degree. Adding a fake boyfriend to the mix? He doesn’t need that complication.
If Casey were his real boyfriend, though? If he got to keep Casey forever? Now we’re talking.
But what if Casey doesn’t want to be kept?

After lunch, Ethan sat at an intricate iron table on Glen Hill Hall’s back patio with Casey. Much to Casey’s dismay, they’d foregone the college cafeteria for lunch, instead choosing the GH Eatery at the back of Glen Hill Hall where they could sit outside and enjoy the weather that would soon turn cold. Plus the Eatery served hot meals and Ethan didn’t want another salad from The Bean Bag.
Theo and Harkrader had taken off for their respective classes, and since Casey was done with them for the day, he’d opted to wait with Ethan for Roman Kinsey.
Once Ethan had submitted the online questionnaire for the mentorship program, everything had happened quickly. He’d received an email confirming the name of his match from the Vermont Trailblazers the following day, then Roman Kinsey had texted him the day after that to set up a meeting time, and now Roman Kinsey was on his way here, to Glen Hill College, to meet with him.
And Ethan had no idea what he was going to say.
Across from him, Casey’s leg bounced. Ethan narrowed his eyes.
“I’m cool,” Casey said, raising both hands in the air. “Totally cool over here.”
“Uh-huh.”
At least his leg had stopped bouncing.
Every move from Casey in the past hour they’d lingered over lunch had drawn Ethan’s gaze. Every time he’d bitten into his chicken sandwich. Every time he’d leaned back in his chair, stretching the material of his black T-shirt over his chest. Every time he’d run his hand through his thick hair, raking it back from his forehead. Every smile that lightly dimpled his cheeks. Every laugh that wormed itself into Ethan’s belly.
He’d always been aware of Casey in a way that he’d never been aware of anyone else. But the way Casey had completely melted against him earlier, when Ethan had caressed his back after Theo’s announcement that Britton was eyeing them, heightened all of Ethan’s senses.
His gaze had continuously strayed to Casey throughout lunch and he was no doubt being obvious about it. Casey, however, seemed completely unaffected.
“Why the Trailblazers?” Casey asked, apropos of nothing.
“Huh?”
“Why is an NHL team mentoring a bunch of college freshmen? The pros are pretty far removed from college, right? Plus, not all of them will have attended college. Wouldn’t it have made more sense for senior members of the team to mentor the freshmen?”
“I asked Harkrader that question, actually,” Ethan admitted. “He just shrugged and said that was Britton for you. Very go-big-or-go-home.”
Cocking his head, Casey said, “What does that even mean?”
“Probably that seniors as mentors isn’t good enough. I don’t know. I didn’t have time to ask him to clarify before the movie started.”
Ethan felt like a moron for not having seen through Britton’s good-ol’-boy facade right from the get-go, but he wasn’t going to let it bother him too much. He’d been duped by Coach Fallon once too, in the juniors. Either he was an exceptionally bad judge of character or he preferred to see the good in people.
He very much hoped it was the latter.
Casey’s brow scrunched. “You went to the movies without me?”
“It was that new horror flick. Bunch of us went to see it in Montpelier yesterday evening.”
“Oh.” Brow smoothing out, Casey cocked his head. “Can I watch it?”
“No,” Ethan said with a laugh. “It’ll be like The Grudge all over again; you’ll spend an entire month sleeping in my bed.”
In hindsight, he should’ve invited Casey.
