Of Scales and Fire by Natalina Reis
Of Magic and Scales, Book Two
The cast of supporting characters from Natalina Reis’s “Of Magic and Scales” are back and stronger than ever, and so are the pop culture references and silly jokes Aiden likes so much. As Aiden and his new family are joined by an unexpected antagonist that may yet prove to be their undoing, will their (un)domesticated new life as a couple be turned upside down?
Aiden Mercer’s life has changed dramatically since his days of being a man-whore, where he spent most of the time either running his coffee shop in sunny Portugal or man-watching at the beach. He now has Naël, a cranky merman to love and to hold, and his sister, Vee, and friends to care for. Life is good.
But life never seems to stop surprising the American ex-detective. A mysterious order of monks, a mermen poacher, shocking revelations about his parentage—and whoever is hunting him down—turn Aiden and Naël’s summer into one to remember. Or maybe one they’d rather forget.

“Just call me, and I will come.” Was he going to sleep outside my room? Or did he have some kind of magic sense of hearing that allowed him to hear me call him from afar? He stepped outside the room. “Goodnight, and sleep with the angels.” I would definitely not sleep with anything remotely dead. I watched him close the door and leave me alone in that dreary space, the light of the candles projecting eerie shapes onto the walls and low ceiling. I don’t think I moved at all for a while, too overwhelmed by the silence and darkness of the place. The candle burning on the windowsill offered little comfort, as the shadows it created stretched and wavered along the walls, ghostly figures that only added more anxiety to my already about to explode nervous system. I shook my head and lowered my backpack and sleeping bag to the mattress, trying to keep my body and mind busy and away from unsettling thoughts. As I rolled out the sleeping bag over what passed for a bed, my thoughts roamed to my boyfriend, wherever he was. God, I missed him so much. Bile climbed my throat to cover my tongue. Would he ever forgive me for being such an asshole to him? How could I redeem myself if he wouldn’t even talk to me? The sleeping bag I had was not the same one we had made love in for the first time, but it still brought back sweet and toe-curling memories. I placed the few bottles of water I had brought with me on the makeshift table, a single slab of rock jutting out from the wall, and threw a couple of books on the bed. Resigned to the fact I would have to spend the night in that dreary room, I stretched out on the sleeping bag, ready to read for a while. I must have dozed off, but I woke up with the horrifying realization that I needed to go to the bathroom. The monk had mentioned latrines. What exactly did he mean by that? I tried to hold it in, but my bladder wouldn’t listen to reason, so I got up and decided to risk a trip down the corridor to where the monk had pointed earlier. The narrow corridor was lit by candles in sconces along the wall and ended in a room I expected to be the bathroom. When I emerged on the other side of the door, it became clear to me that the word “bathroom” was not quite adequate for what I was looking at. The chamber was much larger than any of the ones I had seen on the way to my room. It looked as if it was round in shape and, just like the corridor, lit by a profusion of candles. On the facing wall to the right there was a weird structure that resembled a small house with a couple of wide troughs in front. On the left there was a wooden bench that ran the length of the wall. I approached, an uncomfortable feeling in my chest. That couldn’t be the latrines, could it? “Holy Mother of God,” I exclaimed when I spotted the holes cut out from the bench seat. It was the latrines. I had to give it to the monks; this was definitely very organic and earth-friendly, toilets that were nothing but shitholes. Literally. At least it didn’t smell too bad—maybe I should ask them for whatever they used as deodorizer. I thanked the heavens that I didn’t have to go number two, since the idea of fitting my bare ass in those dark holes was daunting. Who knew what lurked beneath them? I did my business as fast as I could and rushed to my room. The crazy Oracle better make it worth my staying in this weird, spooky house of toilet horrors

About the Author:
Natalina wrote her first romance in collaboration with her best friend at the age of 13. Since then she has ventured into other genres, but romance is first and foremost in almost everything she writes.
After earning a degree in tourism and foreign languages, she worked as a tourist guide in her native Portugal for a short time before moving to the United States. She lived in three continents and a few islands, and her knack for languages and linguistics led her to a master’s degree in education. She lives in Virginia where she has taught English as a Second Language to elementary school children for more years than she cares to admit.
Natalina doesn’t believe you can have too many books or too much coffee. Art and dance make her happy and she is pretty sure she could survive on lobster and bananas alone. When she is not writing or stressing over lesson plans, she shares her life with her husband and two adult sons.
