Agent Cooper Dayton never thought anything could be harder than solving murders. Until he had to plan a wedding.
After taking down an old adversary, Agent Cooper Dayton of the Bureau of Special Investigations has earned a break. Not that planning a wedding to his sexy shifter partner, Oliver Park, is necessarily stress free, but it’s better than worrying about the ominous warning, delivered months ago, that Cooper’s life is in danger.
When he’s dragged to an event by his family, Cooper braces for an awkward evening, but instead finds himself in the middle of an ugly feud between Park’s ex and a rebel pack leader. What was supposed to be a quick outing turns into a full-blown murder investigation after the pack leader ends up dead, Park’s ex goes missing, and Cooper and Park are sent a series of disturbing wedding gifts that are somehow connected to it all.
The list of potential suspects is long, and with the bodies piling up, Cooper must turn to the one person he trusts the least: the villain he’s already put behind bars once and who has nothing to lose by lying and everything to gain if Cooper is out of the picture—for good.
REVIEW:
Big Bad Wolf is one of my all time favourite shifter series. I mean, I love reading about shifters, I love reading about law enforcement, and I love reading series that follow the same couple throughout – so check, check, and check. I also love when we get this far through a series like this one, one that has spent several books solidifying our main characters’ relationship, and is now taking a bit of a different turn.
This isn’t a series that you can simply dive into at book number five. You need to start back at the beginning, when Cooper and Park are first partnered up together and it’s distrust at first sight. So if you are thinking about picking up this series for the first time (and I definitely recommend it!) then just be aware that this review might contain some spoilers for the previous books.
Cry Wolf is actually the story I expected to get in book number four, the story of what happens next with Dr. Emily Freeman, the bad guy who escaped in book three. Freeman has turned herself in to the shifter authorities, but from experience our MCs (and us readers) know that Freeman simply can’t be trusted and they know she has some plan up her sleeve. What ensues, in typical Big Bad Wolf fashion, is a twisty turny keep you guessing plot that draws in many familiar characters from earlier books. Charlie Adhara always manages to keep me uncertain about just what is going to happen right up until it actually happens.
However what I love most about this series is the relationship between Park and Cooper – the alpha dynamic, the work partnership, the uncertainty from both sides about what they have to offer, but most of all the love. The way these two love each other has been so well built up by the author that I damn well believe it when they say things like “you are my favorite part of living” or “I surrender everything to you, heart and soul”. I’m going to be honest, I love romance books, but I’m constantly rolling my eyes at some of the more schmultzy stuff. But with Park and Cooper, OMG, I eat that shit up and want to read more.
