Déjà Vu: A Short Holiday Romance
By Lawrence I. Hill
It’s another Christmas alone in Atlanta, and Alvin is starting to reevaluate his life choices.
Moving back home, his current job, they were meant to be part of a temporary stopping point to deal with some family issues. But now, five years later, he’s still here. In the midst of this inner turmoil, Alvin’s world is shaken when an unexpected visitor comes to stay at the hotel in which he works.
His childhood friend Tim, now known as world-famous R&B singer Tee Mills, is visiting for the holiday. Is this a fated chance to rekindle the first love of his life? Or have their paths diverged so much that they can never reconnect?
Alvin wants to know but isn’t sure he’s brave enough to find out. Before the night ends, however, he’ll have his answer – especially if Tee Mills has anything to say about it.

“And what if I hadn’t been the one to bring up your order tonight? What if I decided I didn’t want to come back up here again after this afternoon?”
Tim rested his forehead against Alvin’s. “Why do you think I booked myself here all week? It wasn’t just for a holiday visit.”
“You were really gonna spend your Christmastime pursuing me?”
“If that’s what it took. I wanted to give myself as many chances as I could. And I’ll extend my stay another week or another month or more if I have to. I’m not prepared to leave Atlanta this time without letting you know exactly how I feel. I might not be strong enough or brave enough to get every step right, but I am strong enough and brave enough to let you know this is it; this is me; this is how I feel about you.”
A rush came over Alvin, a rush that he had not felt in years, a rush, he realized, he had maybe never felt his entire adulthood. Something flared up within him, and in some way, somehow, he felt alive again. As if he had been waiting, stuck in a stasis half of his life, waiting for just this moment.
Still, somewhere a voice told him to be hesitant. Wasn’t it just hours ago that Tim had been crippled by his fears yet again? How would he react if his manager knew, if his recording company knew, if the world knew the truth of who he was? Would he retreat again? Would he cut Alvin off just like he had when they were young?
Alvin had no answers. He was unsure. He was afraid. And still.
He put a hand on Tim’s neck and pulled him close. They kissed.
