Charlie I could walk away and never hear from Eli again, or I could take the plunge and get the film of a lifetime. This documentary would put me on the map. All I had to do was pretend to be in love for a year. Easy. A calm settled over me, my nerves melting away. My shoulders relaxed. I exhaled slowly and nodded, my confidence surging. “I do.” Louise beamed. “Brilliant. I now pronounce you husbands. You may kiss!” Eli raised an eyebrow, and I let a tight smile creep onto my face. I nodded slightly, closed my eyes, and waited. A moment later, the quick press of his lips against mine came, my mouth yielding to his. Before the kiss went any further, Eli pulled back. “That won’t do,” Louise murmured. “Eli, you told me you’re in love this time. Kiss him!” Eli laughed lightly. “We prefer to keep our affections private.” “Hmph.” She stamped her foot. “You asked me to do the honors. The least you can do is give him a proper kiss. My library is hardly a public venue.” “Louise…” His gaze cut to mine, brows furrowed and apologetic. He was trying to protect me, that much was clear. I didn’t mind, though. It was part of the game. I shrugged ever so slightly. Her voice took on a hard tone. “Eli, don’t test me.” Eli nodded once and stepped towards me, all but closing the gap between our bodies. “Ready, husband?” he murmured. My stomach did a flip, probably because I was so tired. I nodded and offered him a small smile. “Ready.” Once again, his lips pressed to mine, my mouth softening against his. They parted gently, and his tongue found its way into my mouth, sliding against my own. He wound a hand around my waist and tugged me in close, our bodies meeting. The strong muscle against my body shot flames through me, my chest tightening until I couldn’t breathe at all. I tangled my fist in his shirt and held myself steady.
