I See The Light by Arden O’Keefe
Elves After Dark, Book 5
Heath had always been a misfit – a weirdo who went all over town in a tank top and shorts even on a coldest day; who claimed his dog could talk to him; who saw this blinding light every Christmas Eve coming from the woods behind his house that no one else saw.
Even his mother made all sorts of excuses to stay far away from him. If it had not been for his grandma – who did love him despite all his oddness, he would never have had anyone to call his own.
The night before Christmas, with the silliest plan in mind and his coward dog tagging along, he sets out to find the true source of the mysterious light he sees from his window. When he finds the cheerful bunch of elves gathered around the magical bonfire celebrating like kids high on sugar, Heath could not be more excited. Then, finding out that he is half elf and half human gives a meaning to his life; finally understanding the reason behind his weirdness.
Buddying up with a cute elf named Shea for the night to see what it means to possess the magic of an elf, Heath goes on a journey to spread the gift of happiness amongst those who have been good this year. But when the night comes to an end, he is asked to make a decision.
Whether to embrace the magic of an elf within him completely or become a plain, old human and go back to living an ordinary life; back in the world where he was never accepted and to the universe which didn’t have Shea in it…

That glowing light was simply gorgeous. It seemed to sparkle, carrying millions of stars along in a white sheet. It was as if several rays of light were delivering the stars up to the bed of the blue sky hovering above. He saw it every year, but the sight of it never ceased to amaze him as it called to him. It was odd, but it felt like the light wanted Heath to follow it. “You’re seeing it again, aren’t you?” Breaking out of the trance, Heath looked down at Leo, who stayed beside him on the step of the porch. “You see the light?” “I see the light,” Heath whispered, looking at it again. “Must be nice to see it. You know I can’t see it, right? It still makes me want to find out where it comes from. So sad I’ll never find the answer.” Heath stared at Leo again, letting the dog’s words sink in. He contemplated the comment for a bit before he grinned. “Wh-why are you looking at me like that?” Leo challenged. “Let’s find out.” “What?” “Let’s go and find out the source of the light,” Heath suggested, as he animatedly pointed toward the line of trees. “What?” Leo yelled, jumping in front of him. “Are you crazy?” He snorted. “Well, people call me crazy anyways. This shouldn’t be a surprise.” “Doesn’t mean you have to act like one. No way, nuh-uh! No way I’m letting you go into the woods unprotected.” “Then you should tag along. That way, I won’t be unprotected.” Leo tilted his head and yelled, “Do you know me? Like at all?!” “Right.” Heath chuckled. “Then, stay. Whatever. I’m still going. I’ll be back soon.” Leo stepped in front of Heath again. “If you want to go, you’ll have to go through me first! Hey, no wait…” Heath shrugged and with a long stride, he stepped right across his tiny friend and began walking in the direction of the woods. “There are monsters in there! You told me that remember? You said you saw the big giant monster in there when you went in there, last time!” The little dog kept hopping in front of him, trying in vain to block his way, which had Heath rolling his eyes. “I was like five when that happened. I must’ve imagined it. Come to think of it, I don’t even remember what I really saw. But… there’s no such thing as monsters. We’ve lived near these woods for years. If there was a monster, somebody else would have seen it and talked about it around town.” Leo reminded, “Nobody sees the light you see, man. What if you were the only one who could see the monster?” His pace slowed, and they both stopped in the middle of the property. “Phew,” Heath heard the dog heave a sigh of relief before sitting down to scratch an itch. Leo did have a point, as Heath thought about it. He’d actually reflected on that night several times, wondering what he’d actually seen in the woods. The night his mother left home and Heath had decided to go into the woods to find where the light actually came from, he’d encountered a man on his way. The mere size of the man, had scared him so much that he’d literally peed in his pants. It wasn’t a proud moment for Heath to talk about, so he never shared the story with anyone, and the memory of that giant person had blurred over the years. Heath wasn’t even certain if it was really a human. It may have been a silhouette of a big tree that only looked like a humongous man. “It was nothing.” Heath shook his head to clear the blurred memory. “I’m going in.” “Wait… wait! I just saw something moving behind those trees.” Leo exclaimed. “Ha ha, nice try, but I ain’t fallin’ for that.” Heath looked behind to see his dog wasn’t following anymore. He sat there motionless, staring at something past him. “Don’t. Move.” Leo whispered, refusing to look away. “Take your steps back slowly. Oh-My-God. He’s looking right at us!” Leo’s voice began to screech by the end of that sentence. Heath looked at him, amused, and followed the direction of his gaze to determine what he was actually seeing. “What are you talking about? You’re just a cowardly… dog.” Heath’s breath hitched when he saw the movement, himself. There was definitely someone out there, someone who was indeed looking at them before ducking into the shadows after Heath had turned. “I saw… I saw someone… something.”
