Widower Dane Winters just wanted a new beginning for himself and his six month old daughter after his estranged husband’s cold-blooded murder and moving to a small town in Southwest Montana seemed like a good place to start. But he never expected a favor for a friend to turn into a deadly encounter that puts him on a collision course with a mysterious stranger passing through town.
Former FBI agent Jaxon Reid stopped in Dare, Montana to right a wrong, not get caught up in the life of an uptight, country vet with a holier-than-thou attitude. But he soon finds himself drawn to the quiet, insecure single father who’s trying to leave behind a life of pain and heartbreak.
Dane can’t deny his attraction to Jax, but he knows that pursuing a relationship with the gorgeous, younger man will only end in heartbreak and turn him into someone he swore he would never be again. But when danger looms, he’s forced to accept Jax into his life and home, along with the emotional vulnerability that being around Jax brings to the surface.
As their connection deepens, can Dane find the trust Jax needs from him in order to build a life together or will he let his past destroy his one chance at a real future?
REVIEW:
This is Book two of The Finding Series from Ms. Sloane Kennedy. We met Dr. Dane Winters in book one. He just moved to Dare, Montana to start anew. His husband was killed and he thought moving to the house inherited by his husband is a new start for him and his 6-month old daughter, Emma. He is still preparing to start up his vet practice when he met Cal, Finn and Rhys who brought in a calf who got injured and the other Vet in town would not attend to it due to homophobia and misconceptions regarding Finn.
In come Jaxon Reid, a former FBI Agent who intentionally passed by Dare in order to inform Rhys Tellar that his former partner and the one responsible for having his witness, his witness’ family, and two Agents(one of which is Jaxon’s brother) killed. And the same person responsible for putting Rhys in prison. He also gave Rhys some documents that would help him clear his name and be exonerated of all the charges against him.
This second installment started with a bang, literally! Two homophobic deputies bent on inflicting more damage on an already struggling CB Bar Ranch put Callan’s barn on fire with a young woman still inside (who saw them commit the deed and hit her), at the same time that Jaxon was there talking to Rhys and Callan. They went into the barn as they see the smoke, rescued Wendy (the young woman visiting a rescued horse) and let the horses out. At this same time, Dr. Dane Winters and Finn arrived. The two deputies shot Finn while he was getting Emma out of the vehicle because Dane was already running to help Wendy. They were trying to escape using Dane’s SUV, with Emma in it. Jaxon handed his other gun to Rhys and they shot the rear tires after which they went to run after the vehicle. Jaxon shot the driver because, unbeknownst to Dane, he was threatening to shoot Emma if they won’t let them go. Without a second’s thought, Jaxon shot him.
True to Ms. Sloane’s style, these men are carrying pains from their pasts. They have both lost someone very dear to them. Dane has always been perceived as weak and not physically strong enough so he totally believes that he is all these things no matter what he does so his initial meeting with Jaxon was explosive (and not in a good way). He thought that Jaxon just shot the driver without considering the safety of his daughter. He was so afraid of losing his daughter because then he will have no more reason to live. Jaxon is confident in his ability to subdue the perpetrators although Dane doesn’t know that, of course.
Opposites attract, it doesn’t really matter what your mind might tell you your heart knows who it wants! Dane and Jaxon are perfect for each other. Jaxon is the kind of person who really doesn’t take crap from anyone, no matter who they are. Much like Rhys actually. Dane is so used to being stepped on that he expects it at times and puts his wall up. These men are so beautiful in their imperfections that you can’t help but fall in love with them. Jaxon just came into Dane’s life at the right time! So good!
